Technics SLQ202 / SL1700 tonearm question

I recently bought 2 cheap direct drive turntables Technics SLQ 202 & the SL 1700. When the record ends, the tonearm lifts automatically and goes back to the beginning. I haven't figured out the logic behind the arm yet, which sometimes has a life of its own.
I find this annoying as hell, is there any way to kill this feature but still keep the platter spinning as soon as you place the needle on the record ?
