that store in Las Vegas

A long time ago I went to a store in Vegas with just a crazy stock of records, like original Sun Ra Saturns filed under 'S', but nothing priced, and when you went to buy something, the guy looked it up online and quoted you the highest price he could find - is that place still around?  Given how much certain records have gone up in price I'm thinking I should have bought more when I was there!

sounds like not a bad business model in a place like Vegas.

Wax Trax. It's still around. The owner is still an grumpy old curmudgeon that will look up every record and price it at the highest sold value.

When I was there last a lady was talking to him at the counter about a box set she bought. Then he proceded to belittle her. He asked her how much she paid for the box set, then looked up the price online, and went on about how she had overpaid for it.

  • Was gonna say, aren't you mistaking this for the record man in the bay area? I guess every town has this guy and his shop

When I get to Vegas to visit my uncle on the way to Yellowstone next month, I'll make sure to stop by WT and haggle with the owner.

Not only would he price it the highest price he could find online, he also accepted unsold ebay listings as valid prices.  That said, I wish I would have bought some more records there, it was a wild selection in the store.

There was/is one of these in Seattle also lol. Actually a couple. It’s kinda funny they are in the biz and think they can get miracle day on eBay prices from a store walk in.

but that's my point about this store being in vegas - i'm sure there are people (probably people on this board!) who come up at the casino and buy what they've been coveting at his prices.

Let the stock rot there.  Good luck paying rent on the store with no turnover.  Unless they own the place outright, in which case the rekkids are just a hobby as they don't need the money.  That makes them plain greedy bastards.

  • The one time I went to that place, which was back in the mid 2000's, the owner refused to let me browse around until I told him exactly what I was looking for. I told him rap 12" to which he directed me to a room with a wall full of them, BTW, this store is a hollowed out house pretty much so there's rooms everywhere.  He then starts name dropping people that have been there shopping for the same types of stuff like Biz Markie and Jazzy Jeff. He then proceeds to tell me that nothing in that room was less then $10 and if I was interested in anything to bring it to the counter and he would tell me how much it was. When I hear things like that I usually turn around and walk out but since he hadn't really dissed me I figured I would hang for a few minutes before leaving. I grab a handful of records off of the shelf and flip through them to which I see artists like Vanilla Ice, Chubb Rock, Kid N Play, & Madonna, all the types of 12"s I find in the dollar bin every day and this fool thinks I'm gonna pay $10plus???? Not in his wildest dreams. I hung out for about 10-15 minutes before I left and never went back. In fact, I don't personally know anyone who every walked into that store a second time because that guy is a huge loud-mouthed jerk.

My friend’s dad was a sweepstakes expert and he’d always be winning shit. Had an uncommon name so he’d enter his kids for stuff. We’d be sitting around my friend’s apartment and there’d be a knock at the door: Weber Genesis Platinum grill. Boom. Trip to Cabo?—sure.

One day we realized the prize Vegas trip on his countertop was set to expire in a week so we called the number and we were off that day. Sick.

I remember being not into Vegas at all so we looked in the yellow pages for record stores. I bought Lonnie Smith Drives from this Waxtrax guy that day.

He wasn’t a huge asshole that day, just a weirdo record store guy. But I didn’t want to return. Now I kinda do.
