Alternative news sources re: looting?

Has anyone been able to find reports coming out of New Orleans that are not filtered through CNN and other mainstream sources? Call me a little skeptical but I really find that the press is sensationalizing the looting and what not. It's not like I don't believe it's going on. I just want to get a sense of the actual severity of it rather than take a hysterical CNN report about it.

Shopkeepers pointing assault rifles at looters is pretty severe, I would say.

  • but if they are rolling the same 5-6 incidents over and over
    then it may not be.

Yeah look guys - YES, LOOTING IS HAPPENING. I don't doubt this. But if you have been watching TV or listening to the radio, reports by individual reporters - relaying mostly on anecdotal incidents - are making it sound like the streets of the worst war zone you could imagine. And while I am willing to believe that shit is really that bad out there, I'd really like to hear it from someone besides the same 3 talking heads on cable news.

Just remember - there was a lot of stuff played up about looting during the 1992 LA Riots but it was very skewed towards making it look like it was just African Americans doing it when, when the full truth came out, the looting of South Central was "It's a Small World" multicultural.

More to my point, I think the looting is just a red herring to direct people's attention and frustration someplace else other than dealing with much more difficult issues and questions.

    Exactly.

And more to the point, that fucking douchebag president should have flown Marine 1 into New Orleans, grabbed as many hurt people as could fit in his chopper, got on a bullhorn, yelled, "HELP IS ON THE WAY. MY PEOPLE... HOLD ON," then comandeered and entire fleet of greyhound busses driven by United States Marines to escort those suffering to safety instead of vacationing for two days then making a big deal of cutting his vacation short only to play guitar, and later announce "no one knew the levee would be breached" (two days after CNN reported "The levee is probably gonna be breached").

Yea, I know I've seen enough of the fotage of the cop with the guage getting the 2 guys to drop stuff. Even some of the cops said most people are just trying to get water and food, and the cops and rescue people are "looting" to survive as well. Can't agree with this statement enough!

You see CNN can say the citizan's are a bunch of savages, but god forbid they say the pres is a lazy idiot who deosn't know when it's time to act. Then there would be hell to pay.

  • the important thing is the shopkeepers private property okay ?

Yahoo news is reporting all kinds of madness - rapes & arson. If this is meant to distract folks from the way this disaster has been handled, it's prolly going to work.

But it actually spotlights how poorly the disaster has been handled. People being abandoned to fend for themselves in an environment that they are unable to survive in? That is going to bring about a ton of bad shit - all of which could have been avoided if the federal government weren't a bunch of self-serving fraudulent scumbags.

there's no doubt that the media is making out like everybody down there is looting. but at the same time, my cousin lives down there, and his car was stolen and his house was completely emptied by random people. while he was working at an emergency room hospital without sleep for 72 hours.
