As good a time as any to get suggestions and see what I missed.

For me it's been a great year for '90s influenced sample-based electronic music, and particularly the resurgence of JUNGLE music.

Sinistaar & Silent Dust - [em]The Chant[/em]

What have I missed?

Definitely the board's own Tom O with his Resolution 88 set. Both retro and futuristic, it is in fact timeless.

Also want to say Omar with 'The Man' but despite perusing the CD just now I can't see if it was a '13 or '14 release.

  • Silkie has released -
Fuck me, didn't realise "Deep Dubstep" was a thing. Ridiculous.

    Ridonculous good, or ridiculouso bad?

Deep dubstep. Well, I think dubstep peaked in 2009. By the time Skrillex came along, it had gone the way of the wobble - see also Jungle's metamorphosis into mid-range jump-up DnB.
Pre-bro-step, all dubstep was "deep". The tag only came about to differentiate the good stuff from the EDM glowstick version.

    2013.

  • I was just being crotchety about Genres. Value based adjectives before a genre make my ass itch because its so judgmental. Having said that, if someone used a negative adjective like Shitty Trance, or Blue Eyed Soul ( ;) I kid ), then I'd be down with that.

Not the best song of the year, but this has way too few views.

As a singles buyer I was wondering if this had been a good year for LPs. I only liked a couple of tracks on [em]Syro[/em], but would it be on anyone else's end-of-year list?
Gibbs & Madlib - I loved the beats...
Is [em]Run The Jewels 2[/em] great, or people holding out for [em]Meow The Jewels[/em]?
Theo Parrish has a new LP just released - anyone listened? Long-time fan of his, but his singles have always been stronger than his LP material imo.

    Two albums I ride for

The Fatima album walked a very fine line between "future jazz" (ugh) and soul. It could have been mad corny, but I think it's really really good.

The YZ album works so well - Mustard and the others made a real cohesive sound and kid is a really thoughtful rapper. It came out in the first quarter and I'm still noticing new lyrics and sonic things. All of the singles were hardbody - no sell-out. Can't wait for the next album!

    This.
Came out very late in 2014, but has been my holiday winter-driving soundtrack so far.
    A very solid album.

YG album had a lot of repeat value, and I was still bumping it come year end. Good, solid rap music, and probably my favourite all-round listen of 2014.

D'Angelo, Lito and Gates all made a mockery of the very idea of year-end lists just as Beyonce did at the end of last year.

The Azealia Banks album was a really nice surprise.

On the reissue tip, I enjoyed Numero's Ned Doheny comp and the expanded version of Grace Jones' Nightclubbing was great.

  • I really enjoyed albums from
    Kindness
    Open Mike Eagle
    PRhyme
    YG
    Vince Staples
    Yung Lean
    Isaiah Rashad
    GFK
    RTJ
    Black Milk
