About
The debut album of legendary Belgian jazz pianists' jazz rock group Placebo. Ball of Eyes is short and sweet with some stand out cuts that made jazz funk aficionados and hip hop samplists take notice with cuts like "Humpty Dumpty," "Aria", and their cover of "Inner City Blues." Moulin's Electric Piano work is Bob James-esque (funky and innovative) and the horn sections smooth as butter. It's oddly disturbing cover design and elusive Euro-only release, made this a vinyl holy grail for the ages.

I have the Counterpoint comp :beerbang:
Listening to Humpty and there is terrible distortion.
I assume this is not on the original.
It has its moments, but i do agree that it always seemed like an over-rated grail.
I personally think it's a really solid jazz funk record. Definitely not the worst record on the list.
I'd like to have an OG.
seriously. tons of way better records of its type. i think the amazing cover art has alot to do with its desireability.
The other Placebo records also have holy grail status. I think it's because of raerity as pointed out above.
But that's just me.
Forget rarity, Ball of Eyes is a GREAT album musically.
That said, it still doesn't match s/t for all-round brilliance.
Most of you don't appreciate the Euroman funk vibe at all. By and large, it's outside of the Strut demographic for comfort and familiarity of style and substance.
Props to those that do 'get it'.
You don't get it. Strutters aren't judging the LP per se they're judging it in the context of it's ranking at 17 out of 100. The comments are mostly mixed. Noone bar one poster said it's "bad". Stick a not-all-round-brilliant LP at 17th spot and expect it to get some flack. Stick it at 85 and expect it to get a lot of praise. As for the euro sound, I don't buy your "Don't like Ball of eyes = Don't like Euro funk" premise. If Troupeau Bleu comes higher I'll ride.
Yes there are weaker moments on this album, yes James Brown and Stevie will serve you all-killer-no-filler albums, but oh boy: This Is It.
Ok I'm not sure how you concluded this supposed premise, but ill agree Troupeau Bleu is better. In fact it's better than anything in the list so far.
I don't even consider Placebo to be fusion, it's too funky.
Some of the funkiest music on the planet is in the jazz-rock fusion idiom (Headhunters for example). Fusion and funky are hardly mutually exclusive (more the reverse). But whatever, music labeling debates get nowhere...
But they are fun!
Yeah in my mind I really separate funky jazz or jazz-funk (which I consider Headhunters) from jazz-rock (which is a term that no one uses because it's called fusion).
Which bag, jazz funk or fusion, would you put a track like this in?
The beat and the lack of rock guitar say jazz-funk, but the loose structure and endless noodling say fusion - it's a hybrid!
well played (I was hoping to catch you!)
then...
that said it always seemed like a case of rarity boosting the price mad high.
I can think of a lot of things i'd rather spend 800 dollars on instead of this joint.
[airfare, a roland sh 101 ,and eventide effects processor etc]
I am happy with the vinyl rip someone posted in the mass mp3 blowout of 05 here on teh strut.
