One of the rarest and greatest Roy Ayers albums of all time ??? the sly, funky and spiritual masterpiece He's Coming from 1971 ??? really the beginning of the funk years from Roy Ayers Ubiquity! This one's a totally solid mix of soulful jazz, jazzy soul and righteous funk ??? and it's straight up wonderful all the way through ??? with a groove that's hugely influential to say the least! Includes the amazing track "We Live In Brooklyn Baby", which has a slow sample bassline in the intro that's just incredible ??? plus groovy cuts like the spiritual funk classic Jesus Christ Superstar "He's a Superstar", "He's Coming", and "Sweet Tears". The lineup includes Sonny Fortune on soprano sax and flute and Billy Cobham drums and percussion, and the record's co-arranged by Harry Whitaker, who's also on keys and vocals ??? with other tracks include "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother", "Ain't Got Time", "I Don't Know How To Love Him", "Sweet Butterfly Of Love" and "Fire Weaver". Amazing stuff, really a beautiful encapsulation of Roy Ayers in peak form!

I remember finding this shit in my pops stash as a teen.

Didnt know what to expect.......BANG.

Took it away w/ me to college and would rock it on my radio show.

Such a nice feel. Kinda "genreless". Mad "Kufi-Soul/Funk/Jazz."

So glad cats finally mined it for samples. And the cover jackin'.

A fellow strutter hooked this up for me, never seen this in the field. First heard in early 90's...20 years later "we live in Brooklyn" has lost none of it's power, the drumming still kills me on "superstar' (not to mention the ill, fuzzed out vibes solo) and even ballads like 'sweet tears" are compeltely unfuckwithable and have even improved with age. Getting out from under herbie mann's cheesy grips did wonders for Roy. although he has alot of good to great records, this is really the one to get.

i have heard people say roy can't really sing but i dig his vocals.

Killa Killa LP, and a tough pull for sure. Don't know where I place it amongst my favourite RA discs. Probably tied with Roy Ayers : Ubiquity and Virgo Red. Always kinda burned me that the first track had such religious overtones: pet peeve about a great song. Then again I guess the title does too...

Billy Cobham is fantastic on this LP.

I think RAMP is a harder find, but RAMP is a one tracker. This record is much better overall.

..but for me it's the string quartet that gave this LP it's edge. The same players were used on the Red Black and Green LP that followed and gave a similar menace to Ain't no Sunshine I haven't heard strings sounding quite like that on any other LPs. Axelrod used strings too for edge but it was a different sound. More full blown orchestra than small quartet.
