Why do scratch DJs rub their palms together during performance?

This is a sincere question. I've seen DMC champs do it, and I've seen suburban kids on YouTube do it.

Is it kind of like how a heavy metal guitar player would thrash his long mane of hair around during a sweet fingertapping solo? (In other words, is it just an inherited stylistic gesture for the genre?)

Or, is there some practical reason for it, like to be sure your hands are dry before you touch vinyl/crossfader?

Thanks,
