Name some bands who added a lead singer presumably to achieve commercial success:
Journey and Kool and the Gang come to Mind

They always had a lead singer. David Clayton Thomas replaced Al Kooper after the first album.
Didnt they always have vocalists in the band and just recruit Bailey from Denver?
Dixie Chicks
The musical worldview implied by this post is staggering.
I took this thread to mean added and/or replaced an earlier lead vocalist. EWF, Journey, and KATG all did more or less the same thing.
First 2 to pop in my head before the thread even opened were:
Van Halen
Jefferson Airplane
Far more intriguing is instrumental groups who added a vocalist.
From with in the group:
Meters
Booker T and MGs
Jazz
Charles Mingus -> Joni Mitchell
Every big band
Bands that added a singer named Thomas to get hits:
Elvin Bishop
Starship
Santana
Otis Redding
Wrecking Crew
Dixie Fliers
Mar Keys
Stuff
Section
Successful groups that subtracted a lead singer:
Impressions, twice
Supremes
Miracles
I suppose most long lived vocal groups had lead singers come and go, but the above groups stand out for the high profile of their lead singers.
