TIMES SQUARE -- Police shut down a portion of Times Square to traffic Tuesday after a man climbed a light pole on 44th Street.

Hundreds of people gathered in the crossroads of the world to gawk at the man, who clambered up the traffic light pole in Times Square around 9 a.m. Tuesday, as emergency workers shut down the area near Seventh Avenues and West 44th Street.

After police coaxed him for nearly 2 hours, the man finally came down the pole in front of 1500 Seventh Ave. around 11:15 a.m.

Officers took him away in handcuffs. They had been standing on top of a police vehicle, talking to the man, as other emergency workers inflated a yellow airbag under the lightpost.

At one point the man stood on the pole and started rapping, leading at least one onlooker into thinking it was a publicity stunt.

"He's trying to promote a CD," Carlos Amaro, 24, of Queens. "It's creative when you come to think about it, but this was not the right way to do it."

Amaro, however, didn't know who the man was or what the CD was.

Some voyeurs grew impatient.

"Hurry up and jump already," a man in the crowd yelled.

Rapping Man Climbs Light Pole, Shuts Down Times Square

Rapping Man Climbs Light Pole, Shuts Down Times Square Some crazy dude has climbed a light pole in Times Square, shutting down traffic. He's apparently rapping? Police are standing on top of a van, trying to coax him down, and you can watch the live feed here. Quite a crowd has developed around Rapping Light Pole Guy, and tourists are no doubt getting the wrong impression that this is something New Yorkers do all the time.

It's strangely appealing! On some level, who wouldn't want to be screaming out rhymes atop a light pole at the Center of the Universe instead of pounding away behind a desk in a soul-deadening office? We will update as the situation develops.

Update: Police have put a ladder right up to the light pole guy. Looks like this thing may end soon.

Update 2: And, the guy climbed down. Booooring. According to DNA Info, he may have been trying to promote a CD, not revive the pole-sitting craze. So ends this episode of Stupid New Yorkers Trying to Get Attention.

(CBS/AP) NEW YORK - The ever-unpredictable New York City street theater scene added a new act Tuesday morning when a man climbed on top of a 20-foot high traffic light pole and snarled traffic even further in Times Square.

Raymond Velasquez, 34, of Brooklyn, could be seen standing atop the pole at the intersection of Seventh Avenue and 44th Street waving to onlookers and then sitting down swinging his feet nonchalantly off the post, according to CBS station WCBS.

Velasquez appeared to argue with four police officers trying to negotiate with him from the ladder of a police emergency truck, while hundreds of onlookers packed the sidewalks to watch.

Police halted traffic and set up an inflatable cushion in case the climber jumped. After about an hour and-a-half, Velasquez came down on his own and was promptly placed in handcuffs, WCBS reported.

He was taken to Bellevue Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

Police said they determined that Velasquez is an aspiring rapper who wanted to promote his CD.
