The Matthew Africa interview made me think of how i handle my own collection
Every year i do some spring cleaning... (right before the annual record convention)
I go through each record and ask myself...why do I have this...should I keep it
Make a pile and go relisten. a night and a 6 pack later...i put together of things to get rid of
Go to the convention..make some purchases...then return to needle drop
The previous night's effort not only help me make smarter purchases but also have more discriminatory ears
Than i have more space to file new arrivals and i add some purchases to the sale pile
That pile allows me to get store credit on stuff the owners bought at the show and most times i almost make my convention spending money back.
How do you operate..and is anyone thinking of taking the Matthew Africa plunge?

I have three criteria for the records I keep;
1. Can I play it out?
2. Is there shit to sample?
3. Can I put this on and listen to it from beginning to end?
The records that are just good for 5 or 10 second samples but don't meet the other criteria get put in a separate pile.
Once I find a good time to do it, I'll go through that pile and sample all those parts/records and then that pile gets sold.
Everything else I try to keep. Unless I really need money in which case I'll go through and try to make a sell pile.
That pile is a lot harder to make!
