    JAMES
    working my side hustle at
    THE NON-PERMIT PHOTO BOOTH

    YOU AND YOUR LADY
    can recreate your favorite
    MARVIN SEASE ALBUM COVER!

    You can pose in the
    FOREGOUND

When I saw Marvin Sease live some time back, on a soul-blues package show, he was grabbing his crotch like the IRS was threatening to take it away.

To be truthful, several of the other male acts were doing it too, but at least they did it in time to the music. Sease just did it randomly for no reason.

You should hear that live version of "Candy Licker" on the album pictured above (where he's feeding the woman cherries in bed on the cover)...he gets on some serious Ray Stevens "The Streak" steez during the spoken intro - "I'M GONNA TAKE OFF ALL MY SHIT!"

So, if you decide to have your photo taken by
    JAMES
    at the
    CHICAGO BLOOZE FESTIVAL
    near the
    OUTHOUSE STAGE,
then make sure James gets in the picture with you
AND MAKE HIM TAKE OFF ALL HIS SHIT
cause if Marvin Sease can do it, we ALL can

    R.I.P.
("The last 'P'--well, that's not that simple...")

  • and I'm still disappointed that James didn't
    TAKE OFF ALL HIS SHIT
    at the Bluesfest photo booth!
    (crotch-grab optional)

    Seriously, though...

What was probably the most intriguing thing about Marvin Sease is that he recorded for major labels, which in this day and age is an achievement for a chitlin-circuit sanger with a jheri curl. He wasn't on Malaco or Ichiban, his records came out on companies like London, Mercury and Jive. This didn't change his demographic any - as far as I know, no contemporary hit radio PD ever heard the censored "Candy Licker" and thought, "hey, he's on the same label as Bananarama - maybe we should add this to the playlist!" When he first came out, I'd seen the records turn up in the stores and thought he was another Vandross or Freddie Jackson, purely based on his label affiliation...then I saw him at a local soul-blues revue alongside Clarence Carter and Bobby Bland and quickly realized different...rest in peace, man.

The 30-something to 60-something black woman in the South love them some Marvin Sease.

#1 requested artist on a radio show I did bitd.

RIP....And I'm positive James nailed what the P stands for.

About the same time Candy Licker was a hit, I saw a guy open for Bobby Bland.
Same type of Southern, dirty, soul/blues.
His hit was a remake of Froggy Went A Courtin. Played it twice in a 40 minute set.

    Anyone know who that was?
