is this the same band and same version of "mississippi mud" as smithsonian?
the labels a hell of a lot cooler!

  • As DC said, same band, different version.
    And, to make things a tad more difficult, there are 2 different versions
    of "Mississippi mud" released on the "Black Blood" label.

    The producer and label boss, Valerian Smith. was a Southern University band
    professor, and owned an independent production company here
    in Baton Rouge. "Mississippi mud" was apparently the title track to
    a self-penned play about racisim.
    The first issue is almost acapella, with minimal hand drum and piano backing,
    while the second issue has a full-fledged band backing.

    Don't know how the "smithsonian" deal came about....

    anyone have soundfiles they can post of either of the blackbloods? i guess id probably like to hear the 2nd issue, but id love to check the accapella too

  • Sorry, no soundfiles, but this is a relatively easy record to pick up.
    Out of town at work right now, but when I get home this wknd, i'll
    post up the release #'s so you can hunt down the 2nd issue.
    I used to see these on the bay pretty often, always under a bill.
