Free photo editors (NRR)

I need to do some real basic edits to some photos (edits that are nonetheless beyond the "crop" and "resize" and "darken/sharpen/etc." functions available in Paint or the Picnik free version).

Any suggestions? I'm not tryna buy Photoshop or anything....I just need some basic functionality...

I love photoshop.. I highly reccomend finding a bootleg copy.

paint.net is great, its pretty much a photoshop clone, easy to use

^ yeah paint.net is great...sadly i recommend "borrowing" a copy of photoshop...

it should be in the "usual" places...

I'm looking for free software that I can use to crop and merge images together. It would be nice to be able to do a arbitrary rotate canvas like like you can do in Photoshop with the ruler tool.

Any ideas?
