Inexpensive sound modules?

I play bass in a rock band. We have a few songs that might sound better if the bass were replaced with some sort of synth. I have a 49 key MIDI controller and would like a somewhat rugged sound source that I can use at shows (I'd like to avoid bringing my laptop onto a beer soaked rock stage so software solutions are out the door).
Can anyone recommend a decent sound module that can be had for, say, $300 or less (I'm thinking 80's units that can be grabbed on eBay)? As for what I'm looking for, I'd be filling in for the bass in a pretty gritty rock band ... anything with some decent synth tones and some ok piano, organ, etc. I'm looking at the Roland U-220 and the Emu Proteus right now (leaning towards the Roland based on the samples I've listened to. Are there any others I should be looking at?
Thanks for any suggestions.
