Bizarre Genre Combinations (Club Night-R)

A friend of a friend is a promoter who's starting a new club night in Boston. My friend asked me if I wanted to DJ, so I asked her what sort of music they were looking for. Her answer: old and new techno with soul songs mixed in.
I mean, just from a DJing perspective, I have no idea how you could pull that off. Is it just mixing a few techno tracks, then "Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for Baby Huey and the Babysitters!"?I know some of you must have been asked something similarly ridiculous in the past, like black metal/samba night. Please tell me I'm not alone.

Especially with the newer "minimal" stuff that is at
a much slower tempo than your usual 138bpm rush.
I did a night for years that was a mix of Nola Bounce, Electro-ish
breakbeat techno, Miami Bass and uptempo funk and soul.
Probably played one funk/soul cut for every 3 electronic stuff.
Worked really well.
Most old UK techno and to a lesser extent US techno got its inspiration
if not some sounds from "Northern" soul, and just US soul in general.
It will take some pre-planning to find good danceable soul that fits
in with the electronic stuff tempo wise, but thats just time.
Mixing-wise, just concentrate on 4-bar quick mixxing or on-the-one drops.
Dude, take the gig. Sounds mega-fun.
It was quite disconnecting when they'd move between 'em at clubs and gigs.
On balance I don't think it worked.
Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, old Cameron Paul stuff, Cosmic Cars etc?
All that stuff applies.
Just go get 20 "new" techno records, cost you a couple hunnid, get you about
1 and a half hours of techno.
With your stack of BPMed soul, you change the ratio to 1 techno
to every 3 soul, and BOOM, you got a 3 hour set.

I'm just jealous 'cause this isn't even possible in my city these days.
I do have a couple Theo Parrish Ugly Edits and a bit of other housey stuff, but I got the feeling that wasn't what they were looking for. Maybe I'm wrong, though.

I wouldn't consider Gary Numan and Depeche mode to be techno, but again, maybe their net is cast wider than my understanding of techno. I should probably just check out the night and see what they're doing.
Well, in my experience the average person calls most electronic music
"techno". A DJs definition of "techno" will be much different.
I just suggested these 'cause they are probably in your collection,
and are the mainstream basics for "old techno". But shit, if you think
the housey-discoid stuff would apply, most techno dudes wouldn't call
that techno anyway so who cares?
Sounds like they just want a mix of 21st century electronic music
and 20th century soul music.

Yeah, I would ask her to clarify. Maybe by "techno" she meant "general electronic dance music," and by "techno with soul songs" she meant "throw it down Detroit style, you know like Theo Parrish."
seriously, I've heard more than one person in my car when I'm playing some shit like Justice, Daft Punk, Teller, Oizo, Sebastian etc. refer to it as "techno"
and then I think to myself, what the F*ck about any of these songs reminds these people of James Brown is Dead?
Is it what draws/retains a big crowd?
Is it what draws/retains the "right" crowd?
Is it what makes the club manager/staff happy?
Is it doing what personally makes you, the DJ, happy?
Is it what makes people dance?
Is it what makes the DJ think to himself/herself, "I am so cool"?
Is it what makes certain people think to themselves "This DJ is so cool"?
Is it what fits with the physical decor/theme of the club space?
Plain and simple...if you aren't mashing up Ying Yang Twinz with the Bangles, you ain't doing it right.

Yeah, I've heard that a million times. They start to diss electronic music in general, and then revealing that by "techno" they mean "Scooter" and similar dance acts on MTV. No point going into an argument about electronic music with someone like that...done that far too many times.
