    Mac OS X startup error screen I've encountered once

    That's not an error screen, it just means that you booted up your mac in target mode, effectively making it an external disk you can connect to other computers via firewire as you would with a regular external disk. A mac goes into target mode when you hold down the "t" button on your keyboard during startup.
