    I hope this isn't J. Gaines related!

Ya I THOUGHT that myself as well possibly... NYC headz maybe know what's up?

The inclusion of CUBAN / COLOMBIAN / VENEZUELAN / BRAZILIAN LPs had me thinking otherwise though... though i didn't really look too much at that guy's auctions...

    Kako y su Combo Vol 2 / Vol 2 / Alegre
I need the first Kako record on Alegre. I almost never see clean black label copies. One of his best...

Well, a couple for sure.. off the top of my head...

Manny Corchado WAS going for that... not sure now...

Los Yoyi on Aerito.. same deal... atleast on eBay...

A few other nice joints in there...

Ah, see, I always thought of the Corchado as more of a $200 piece, same with Los Yoyi but I can imagine when they might have gone heavier. Same with the Zamot on Decca.

i contacted this dude back in feb and he is only interested in recouping exactly what he put down or more. he bought a bunch of em in japan at the worst time, so height of the market plus boutique markup plus horrible currency rate to the dollar.

he also claims the better pieces are mint and i sure as hell have never seen a mint areito.

i'll be happy to buy a couple after academy or grnyc picks up the collection two years from now.

no worries, i guess you contacted him too.

Huh? Are you talking about a particular title? It's not really that unbelievable.

That FA 5 LP you hooked me up with was sparkling mint.

If he wants top dollar he should stop wasting peoples time and put a price on the collection or individual pieces.

Condition ranges from very good-excellent and can be discussed in detail when a price has been offered and is being negotiated.

So once I make an acceptable offer then he will start negotiating.
    Who has time for that?

Be sure your offer is well below what you are willing to pay.

first of all there's no such thing as a mint record.

but more pragmatically i have a couple real clean areitos, they might sparkle, they might shine but kind of semi-noisy pressings overall.

I dunno man - the Areito titles I have (provided, not many) tend to be quite minty in sound and condition.

Yeah in fact Areito for me is one of those labels where I look at a flimsy, beater cover and think "oh this is gonna be in some brasilian condition" and then is near perfect.

Oh and Adam that FA5 record is one i highly regret not ripping for the microwave before I came here...you're welcome to rip it and post it up here or the blog if you so desire, especially the Jungle Boogie cover.

And if anyone has that record and doesn't like it you're welcome to sell me or him another copy. I also still need a clean Los Yoyi too.

pm me if anyone needs his contact info. dont know if he will sell individual titles by mail.

i offered him 60 cents on the dollar for the lot as there were a bunch of fileable cuban wants in there and my bonus had just come in. figured i could slow sell anything not worth keeping. dude brushed me off.

not mad at that, to each his own. oddly enough, i'm experiencing this all over again trying to buy my family a home. found a place that has been on the market 9 months and right near the train. our buyer agent recommended an open of x and i put in x + 5% as we really like it. the sellers came back with "oh no, we can't even begin negotiating with that opening bid as we would be losing 30% from what we bought at 4 years ago". you know, your mistakes at the top of the market are really not my problem..

You should tell 'em that and see how it goes over

In all seriousness, I get where the sellers are coming from but bottomline, lot of these folks are going to be in for a major reality czech.

Curious, what city are you looking for? Unless that home is in some super-trendy neighborhood with kick ass schools, they're probably f---ed.

    I hate the haggle.
What is wrong with being honest about what you can pay and what you can sell for.
I appreciate a little discount and am happy to give one, but the idea that one party deliberately prices something too high, so that the other can make an offer that is too low, makes no sense to me.
By the time the haggle is over everyone feels like they have been ripped off.

Plus I dislike the language that is used to describe the haggle and the hagglers.

it's out in jersey and the comps are trending downward so it makes no sense. they're just unwilling to take any hit. whatever. some people get so paralyzed by the fear of potentially making a mistake they get like a deer in headlights.

I'm sympathetic to the degree that I know a LOT of well-meaning people who all bought at the height of the market and are getting f---ed because of their timing right now. What can you do except ride it out or take the hit?

Nobody's forcing people to sell, but if you're gonna wade in...

I've got some good friends who bought in a "transitional" part of East Oakland. I don't think they're *ever* gonna get back up to what they paid. I just looked on SFGate today for shits and giggles and I can now buy a 3-br on the Berkeley/Oakland border for the same price they paid to live out by the zoo. Raw deal

Word - I know a lot of stories like that and it sucks but what are you going to do? I'm just glad my wife and I have been too cheap to have wanted to buy when we first moved to LA.

    Bullet = dodged.

So what happens to this collection?

He will never get his price so...
Does one of us pick up the phone a year from now and make an offer, and he says, yes I just need to get rid of them?

Does he start putting them on ebay, never achieving his reserve, then donates them to Goodwill?

Does he put them in the basement where they slowly mold and when one of us gets to go down there in 7 years we find the lps in the back have fused with the concrete wall?

Does he finally say yes to the guy who offers to pay $5 a record and make him cds of the entire collection?...
