The only thing that sucks is that a lot of people will be out of jobs, not good right now. Maybe in the future there will be something more feasible, but it's like the boroughs of New York, people want to make sure each island retains its own identity and not end up being a solid someone's Pacific fantasy of paradise just because they can afford to say it is.
From what I've heard from multiple people who grew up on Kauai, the only people who were really against it were people from the mainland who bought retirement homes. Unfortunately, they're also the ones who have the time and money to make it an issue. Lots of people on the neighbor islands were totally for it because it would be cheaper to get to Oahu and business (for farmers especially) was a lot easier to conduct.
The state did it wrong from the beginning and this was almost bound to happen but man, talk about bad timing, huh?

That's true, well hopefully someone will try to make a more downscale version, but the whole thing got ugly to begin with.
