"A FEISTY one-time DJ who is still officially too young to run for president, Andry Rajoelina was handed the reins of the Indian Ocean nation by the army yesterday.At 34, Mr Rajoelina succeeded in an unlikely bid to unseat the island's strongman, Marc Ravalomanana, which started only late last year when he aired increasingly vociferous criticism of the regime on his private TV channel.Under pressure from the army after a crisis which has left around 100 people dead, Mr Ravalomanana's seemingly tight grip on power had been fast slipping in recent days until he finally announced his resignation yesterday.His final decree handing power over to a provisional military authority was rejected by the army, which proclaimed it was transferring power to Mr Rajoelina, who only became the undisputed leader of the Opposition earlier this year.The string of demonstrations organised by Mr Rajoelina's camp since the start of the year rarely attracted more than a few thousand supporters and his movement often appeared in danger of fizzling out.But the young leader got a whiff of victory on Monday, when the army, having turned against Mr Ravalomanana, smashed into the presidential compound, letting Mr Rajoelina and his supporters take over the compound the next day."We are now reaping the fruits of our efforts. It is the will of God. I will use my efforts to the end,'' Mr Rajoelina told jubilant supporters.One of them described the event as a "David versus Goliath victory''.Heading two communications firms, the young entrepreneur had launched Radio-Television Viva ahead of the polls to popularise his candidature and won 63 per cent of the vote.Monikered TGV, the French acronym for high-speed train, for his quick-fire personality, he turned the initials into his movement's name: Tanora Gasy Vonona, or Young Dynamic Madagascan. Rajoelina branded the Government a dictatorship and in January called for a general strike that turned violent and claimed dozens of lives.One of his first tasks at the helm of the transitional authority he set up last month will be to fill the constitutional gap of his takeover, not least of which the article which makes him six years too young to run for president."
