Never tried it with a 12" or LP, but have used the method several times with 45s. My results have varied. If done carefully (i.e. not drunk or absurdly stoned), it can really improve the sound of some records.
I've done this dozens of times, and it can work wonders (sometimes, though other times it makes no difference, depends on what's wrong with the wax). BreakSelf is absolutely right though, you want to be somewhat sober. I like to get a nice thick coat on so the edges don't get too thin (because then it doesn't come off with the rest of it). Those tabs in the picture are a really good idea because getting it started can be tough.
As obvious as this will sound, you gotta leave it to dry somewhere flat.
Hmm. Does it matter what kind of wood glue? Any recommendations? I have a few records that have deteriorated to the point of being almost unlistenable due to dirt.

I will try that one day soon, thanks

Maybe I might try it on some old turd that's lying around
Whoremonger maybe
From what I've heard, it HAS to be polyvinyl acetate (PVA) based glue.
Old thread about the glue trick:

I still haven't tried it, but someday...
I wonder if it'd remove the annoying residue left from crappy plastic lined inners?
