I came across this LP recently in blogland an was surprised with how solid it is. Some of the tracks remind me of stuff off of Viva Arsenio!, which is one of my favorite Latin albums. It makes me wonder what other kind of crazy Afro-Latin records are out there waiting to become the next big thing. They got beats.

  • in all seriousness man, there is a lot of back and forth between "latin" music and west african music. a lot. you might try this guy youssou. he is ok.

  • If you're searching for bands with a strong Latin tinge Senegal has a lot of music that you may find appealing. The older Senegalese bands such as Orchestra Baobab and Starband have a strong Latin influence. Even a lot of the early Mbalax bands such as Ouza, Etoile de Dakar, and Royal Band of Thies have a lot Latin influence. Congo and Zaire had a slew of bands that had a strong Cuban influence in their sound. Bands such as Grand Kalle, Franco & OK Jazz, Dr. Nico & Tabu Ley, and Bantous de la Capitale. After about 1970 the Cuban influence on much of the music coming out of Congo and Zaire began to lessen because of the younger generation of musicians.

Also the Lusophone countries had some pretty interesting music although their music is more Brazilian inspired. Guinea-Bissau had a band name Super Mama Djombo which put out some pretty good music. On another site I frequent there was a conversation about a band name Africa Negra here's the only full track I can find by them.
