  • Welcome!
    We need your money.

Records: Not so much. R+R Collectables on Decatur in the Quarter.
Louisiana Music Factory also on Decatur, further up.
Domino Sound on Bayou rd, only been once, kinda ehhhh.

Food: FANY: Cafe Adellaide on Poydras. Newest offering from Antoine's family,
ate there a few weeks ago, pricy but just about the best creole fusion
    I have ever eaten.
LOCAL GOODNESS: Mandinas on Canal. Best pan fried fish EVAR. Mean and crusty irish channel waiters. Huge pours on tha dranks.
QUARTER SECRET: Verdi Mart on Royal. THE shrimp po-boy. Real Heads.
IF ONLY ONE: Commanders Palace on St. Charles. Simply the best meal to be had in NOLA. Jacket required. Turtle soup better than anything ever.

OTHER: Hipster shops and good antique shopping on Magazine st., uptown. Also a good place to check out the Tulane honeys.
NOMA has a Rodin show currently. Free, I believe.
HORNETS! Games are cheap, and we are doing pretty well.

    Hope this helps.

  • Thanks a lot,

    Dress

  • Butt of course.

Let us know how you liked it, what ya ate, what ya bought.

  • Welcome!

Records: Not so much. R+R Collectables on Decatur in the Quarter. This place has been closed for at least half a year now.[/b]
Louisiana Music Factory also on Decatur, further up. Amazing for local cds, decent for vinyl[/b]
Domino Sound on Bayou rd, only been once, kinda ehhhh. Actually this place can be really really good. I go at least once every two weeks - usually really well priced, especially on bigger ticket items. They have an especially good reggae section.[/b]

Food: FANY: Cafe Adellaide on Poydras. Newest offering from Antoine's family,
ate there a few weeks ago, pricy but just about the best creole fusion
I have ever eaten. Haven't been yet, but I hear good things[/b]
LOCAL GOODNESS: Mandinas on Canal. Best pan fried fish EVAR. Mean and crusty irish channel waiters. Huge pours on tha dranks. Good, other places I like more for seafood though[/b]
QUARTER SECRET: Verdi Mart on Royal. THE shrimp po-boy. Real Heads. Word[/b]
IF ONLY ONE: Commanders Palace on St. Charles. Simply the best meal to be had in NOLA. Jacket required. Turtle soup better than anything ever. A legend to be reckoned with, but not the best meal in NOLA. Cochon, Bayona, Brigtsens, Herbsaint, and Galatoire's are all better IMO. Also it's really expensive. [/b]

OTHER: Hipster shops and good antique shopping on Magazine st., uptown. Also a good place to check out the Tulane honeys. Tulane girls are indeed fine, but it would be all Cougars on Magazine St. on a weekday[/b]
NOMA has a Rodin show currently. Free, I believe. Too bad you didn't come a week earlier; could have hit up the Prospect 1 Biennial[/b]
HORNETS! Games are cheap, and we are doing pretty well. Except that Tyson Chandler and David West are both injured now[/b]

    Hope this helps.

Dreskie, I could give tons more recommendations on food, just let me know what exactly you're looking for. For the RAER check Jim Russell's Records on Magazine St. Can be pricy, and it's been picked at for ages now, but there's still always more stuff to be found there. I'm pretty sure it's where those few copies of Salt - Hung Up were found. Hit me up on the PM for more info.

As far as other stuff in town goes, you'd probably want to check some good music at night. How long are you in town for? I can see what's good and get back to you.

  • Damn Willie!
I heard R+R on decatur opened back up. No?
Sure, Jim Russells, but that place is run by really creepy/crummy/crusty
sellers, so it gets TEH BAN from me. Spend your money at domino
or mushroom uptown if it is still open.

Dogging Mandinas? Are you from Metarie or somethin?

I stand by Commanders. All of the other joints WF mentioned are
excellent eatieres for sure, but they don't come CLOSE to
the real deal New Orleans Creole Experience thet CP's offers.
Bayona? Pffft. Maybe Herbisaint gets a pass. Maybe.
Its all good, local loyalty is FIERCE down here.

Where you at, Willie? I work in NOLA but live in BR.

  • Hah, local loyalty is fierce indeed! talkin neighborhood, even street loyalty! Metairie? Never that, son! I live and work in the Marigny.

I hear you on the Jim Russell's shopkeepers - I usually have a good experience there but know plenty of people who haven't. But hey - you were the one sticking up for mean, crusty folks from the Irish Channel!
But yeah, the dude who runs Domino Sound is a million times cooler and nicer to deal with - just doesn't have some of the raers that Jim Russell's does.

The Mushroom is still open, but it's horrible for vinyl; barely worth it. Mostly rockist/easy listening terds in bad condition. I've never come up there and basically gave up on it. Most of their business now is incense, pipes and t-shirts.

Oh, and R&B collectibles/Vieux Carre Vinyl is DEFINITELY not open. Something went down with their closing too. I bought stuff there in Feb last year while visiting, and when I moved back here in the fall they were gone...I keep asking around if they're going to reopen somewhere else and every time I mention them people say, "Damn, it's such a long story about them, no way I can explain it right now. I'd need a couple hours and many drinks to get through that one".

Guess I'm just a lil' dude not privy to the insider info...

i thought i was the only strutter in the area, good to hear from you!

Are you from Metarie or somethin?

    FAIL.

  • 'Tsall good. The Marigny is my favorite neighborhood to
get lifted in. DJ Soul Sister rules that place.

RE Rock&Roll Collectables: DUDE. I have heard a story or 2 about
their owner, DICK, and what may of happened there. I had heard from an ex-employee that it was opening back up. You don't wanna
    know, believe it. Tranny-punk-chics-on-bikes-related.
I'm not there more than 3-4 days a week, but if I lived there I would
be super-sleuthing to track down that stock. Not the shop stock, but
the owners private stash. That shit is a NOLA legend.

Anyway, I'm gonna drag the girl down there this weekend for Hustle! at Mimi's.
Holler on the connect if you wanna meet up for some trades or whatever.

  • Are you from Metarie or somethin?

    FAIL.

So, you must be from Metarie?

    Makes sense.

I enjoyed the charbroiled oysters at Dragos, I also enjoyed Walter "Wolfman" Washington at dba on Wednesday nights, I also enjoyed Louisiana Music Factory (what does the guy that "works" upstairs there actually do, except look at you funny??) I enjoyed the WWII museum, I enjoyed the Backstreet Mardi Gras Museum, I enjoyed the 2 for the price of 1 ribs at the House of Blues, there is probably other stuff, oh yeah the Cajun Pride Swamp Tour out at LaPlace. Fun city.

    Um, ok.

Every cat I have ever met from Met'rie OR Harvey seemed
to be a total conspiricy-theorist nutso. Only NOEast is worse.

    Just checking.

    B/W

I actually find you and your ilk very entertaining.

    Seriously.

  • Puhleeze.
You mean like dudes from freakin HARVEY, LA
moving to Texas and loudly championing obscure rapps?

    I feel ya.

I'm a Loosiana dude. No city affiliations here.
I heart New Orleans, but the 'burbs are teh suck.

    DEAL

    B/W

    I still find you entertaining.

    "No city affiliations here" =

Not to mention all these applications of yours, from an outsiders perspective, on what's authentic and not authentic, or even obscure or not obscure, when it comes to NOLA and Texas are wholly clueless.

But of course we are here just to be categorized by you.

Like those who thought the levee was blown post-Betsy...crazed conspiracy theorists who surely would never ever have to live through the same thing again.

"Seriously", eat your gumbo and shut up.

    DUDES!!!
I'm in a battle with the one Harvey! I fff-finaly feel like I belong.

    Um, so yeah.
Aren't you the dude who wrote a column in Austin
where you signed off under an assumed "black" name?
    "Shied" or something?
No need to even clon you on that one.

I've lived in NOLA for about 4 years off and on.
Lived in TX for about 3, going to school in SanAntonio.
    Um, so yeah.

    You win!

    B/W

Super-entertaining! (I knew there was a reason I stayed home sick today...)

    Wow, you know Tyrone?
That dude got on some serious come-ups from me back before I was a
rael head, and way before I knew the deal. Or the transaction.
Haven't seen the dude post-Katrina, but he used to always show up
at the french qtr flea with all kinda heat.
Good guy, if not a little odd.

    I miss those days.

Verdi Mart at 3am tomorrow night, batches!

WHY THE FUSK DID NO ONE TELL ME ABOUT THIS STORE???!!!

'Cause it kinda sucks, dude. It was worth a visit maybe 5 years ago,
but not so much now. Just my opinion. And I'm a carpetbaggeur, so whatdoIknow.
I question the validity of teh salts being found there.
    Always heard a different story.

  • share those salt stories!!!

i trooped a lil bit with tyrone when i was in nola. superdude. i hope everything shaked out allright

  • Ha! Local secrets, dude.

RE: Tyrone, we are talking about the same dude, somewhat sloppy
older black gentleman with the crazy house that smells like
ferret urine and is/was busting at the seams with turds?

Good guy, and I don't think he lives here anymore. Houston, I believe.

    phew

last time I went was in November and I found really good shit, not dirt cheap but decent enough. that being said, 5 years ago it was much, much better. i still remember going in there in middle school (circa 1999) and being the only person in there who wasn't from England, Japan, or Germany. That was before i was copping leo sayer ellpees, and was just going there for cheap used cds and nintendo 64 cartridges. i was always really confused what all these "tourists" were doing there. now i know they were scooping up NOLA funk 45s on the cheap.

  • Oh, and Verti Marte closes at midnight ever since Katrina. Used to be 24hrs, and a guarantee to find the weirdest people in the city awake at 5am. They still make the illest po-boys though.

Liuzza's by the Track, Gene's Po-Boy, most definitely Mandina's, and splurge at K-Paul's (I still have ties to that place, but it's delicious).
