b, 21b, 21b, 21she went straight through, but she had funding so she could afford to.

Quote:/font1h, 21b, 21my wife defended her PhD thesis this morning and is officially Dr. Byram. ten years of college and she's finally done...it's weird. b, 21b, 21h, 21
b, 21b, 21Congratulations to Dr. Byram!!! I've been there, done that so I know the diligence and perseverance that it takes to complete a dissertation (and doctoral study). Now she has to make those final changes and deal with the "ruler Nazi" at the graduate school. What is her field of study? Where will she go from here, academia? I wish her well in her new career.b, 21b, 21Congratulations to you too, for I'm sure your support and encouragement were key components of her success. My wife (girlfriend and eventually fiancee at the time) helped a great deal, even assisted me in collecting dissertation data. That's love right there, and I'm sure she'd highlight your supportive role as well.b, 21b, 21Peace,b, 21b, 21Big Stacks from Kakalak

Congratulations! What do you do, may I ask? I'm only asking because I'm a DJ and when people ask me what my wife does and I say "She's an attorney" people always bug. But yeah, that's really great stuff. I felt the same way when my wife graduated law school, and then passed The Bar. An amazing accomplishment and I think people often overlook the work and stress that goes into it. Lord knows the 3+ years of law school was tough as hell on her, and us. Plus not to discount the fact that for those 3 years I was the sole bread winner of the house... but now everything is GRAVY!b, 21b, 21Congrats again to you and your wife.
b, 21b, 21b, 21Aerospace Engineering b, 21b, 21h, 21b, 21b, 21So basically, what you're saying is that she's a rocket scientist.b, 21b, 21 b, 21b, 21h, 21b, 21b, 21C'mon man, AE isn't exactly rocket science. b, 21b, 21b, 21b, 21She's not going to leave you, right? If Seinfeld taught us anything, it's that the dream of becoming a doctor is dumping whoever you're with and finding someone better. b, 21b, 21For real though, congratulations. I'm in school (on some way more minor shit) so I know what the grind is like. Props.

b, 21b, 21b, 21I'm an engineer too (M.E.), but just a regular-ass one. She's definitely waaay smarter than me. Anyway thanks for the kind words, it's been a long haul.

Congrats. My Girl is writing her doctoral thesis right now. So, basically it gives her a pass to have emotional ups & downs whenever she wants. To her defence she does work a few jobs on the side which makes things a little more complicated time wise. Plus, she has to make sure I'm fed and bathed.

I'm just curious because my boy is up in the air about which career path to take. Is there a role for a PhD in the applied sector in her field? There isn't much premium given in applied business-related fields for a PhD, so I wonder if that situation translates into the aerospace area. I would guess it's useful for design research in the defense industry.b, 21b, 21Peace,b, 21b, 21Big Stacks from Kakalak
she's going into industry...she had her eye on a teaching job, and actually may wind up switching over in a year or two, but for now she's entering the real world. universities just move SO SLOW with their hiring process. also we had dinner with one of her friends this weekend who is a professor and he said he's been amazed at how much the decision making behind who gets grant money is based on what school you are affiliated with. the MITs of the world tend to get all the money even if their proposals are shoddy. i thought Michigan was a pretty elite engineering school but apparently it's second tier (and Cincinnati, where she wantes to teach, is 3rd or worse).b, 21b, 21and yeah a lot of the aeros i know work in defense.

b, 21b, 21Hey Hammertime,b, 21b, 21It's nice to hear she has an assortment of career options. In my field (HR Management), a PhD isn't necessary for applied work. In fact, I know a lot of Master's level degree holders (MBAs, MAs in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, Human Resources, etc.) that make chips at fortune 500 companies and independent consulting firms. I worked at the latter for a while, but I wanted to do research and teach which is nearly impossible in the applied realm. Plus, I like shuttin' down a little early on Fridays . Congratulations again to both of you!!! Now, go and pop some champagne!!!b, 21b, 21Peace,b, 21b, 21Big Stacks from Kakalak
