I have to say - I always thought of the Hoctor catalog as being on the smaller size simply because I'd see the same titles come up again and again but then I keep learning about new titles, some of them even better than some of the "classics" off the label. b, 21b, 21For example, the ones I commonly see being sold included:b, 21b, 21Jazz Rock USAb, 21Robin's Rockb, 21Jazz on the Roadb, 21...and of course, the ubiquitous "Jazz With Luigi"b, 21b, 21But more recently, I've discovered some new titles, like "Jazz In Focus" (which kicks ass relative to other Hoctor titles).b, 21b, 21And there's this title, which I had never seen before: which sold for an unbelievable $400. b, 21b, 21That reminds me - Jinx, if I remember, I think you have this title: http://cgi.ebay.com/JAZZ-IN-THE-SUN-LIST...1QQcmdZViewItem/a1b, 21b, 21SELL THAT SHIT HOMIE. (This is one of the more tepid Hoctor titles I've heard but hey, if someone wants to pay over $500 for it, go for it!)b, 21b, 21So what else on Hoctor has flown below the radar but is worth checking for?

I think Finewine has/had their whole discography... so I'll go out on a limb and say there's some heat.b, 21b, 21I have a couple of Hoctor 45s and half a dozen Statlers, they seem to be less well known but that's all I find.

The Statler stuff is more uneven to me but then again, I've only heard a small handful of titles.b, 21b, 21Hoctor's 45s can be solid - their version of "Cissy Strut" is one of the best covers I've ever heard and their "Scorpio" isn't half-bad either. That said, the best shit I've heard on the label has come off of LPs.

I usually will pick up a couple of hoctor and statler 45's at the junk shop around the way, but damn if that shit an't all tap dance music...

  • PATXPATX 2,820 Posts
Ha yeah it's mostly tap dance and jazz hands shit. That would be the def of uneven.b, 21b, 21a couple of these are smoking thoughb, 21img src="http://futurefunk.net/img/scans/statler.jpg"1

b, 21b, 21b, 21Gold Coast Tepid? Never that O-Dubby! Though I dunno who would drop that kinda dough on the lp when you can cop the 45 on the cheap. Other fire contained within?

  • Jesus that price is insane. Sold it for $100 or so in the shop last year... took a while to move too.b, 21b, 21Ebay is getting more and more stupid.

Back to the original question: what are the other Hoctor LPs worth checking for? b, 21b, 21As noted, that Jazz in Focus one is more obscure but i1solid[/i]. A lot more interesting than Robin's Rock (even though that one has sold for good $ given the breaks on it).

I just put 'Jazz in the Sun' on - it's good!b, 21b, 21this may be the best Hoctor I've come across - considering that even the better Hoctors are usually just some piano jazz walks with maybe some bongos & this one is actually 'funk'

I talked to Hoctor back in the day. Got all their Jazz Dance titles. Didn't know about all the other great stuff at the time. I thought about flying to the East Coast and spending a day in their offices but it never happened. b, 21b, 21A few years a go I called Statler. They have endless good 45s. I just sold Stinker which is a Psych cut. They were hard to talk with. After months the owner called me and wanted to sell me their entire vinyl back stock (unseen) at retail. I passed. I have a few of their ballet records, I don't need more.

I talked to the drummer on Jazz Technique. He had no idea they had recorded and released that. He played classes with Luigi. He also played with Barbara Carroll for years. Was only allowed to use brushes.
