R&B singer Mary J. Blige, for example, writes that Franklin is "the reason why women want to sing."     Dylan > Redding is a joke and I can only assume from that list that McCartney, Dylan and Lennon are all above Roy Orbison as well. b, 21b, 21Then againb, 21b, 21/font1

He is one of the greatest singers in American folk/pop/rock history (well at least up to the mid 70s). Tremendously emotive even with zero range. But Plant is not top twenty. I bet Donny Hathaway and Bill Withers are nowhere near this list. edit (just saw that Donny is #48). Bono ahead of Curtis Mayfield? Elvis is ranked way too high. Weird/bad choices include Bjork, Don Henley (Jann Wenner needs get off this guys dick), Brian Wilson (not really a singer as much as a songwriter), Paul Rodgers, Patti Smith (hated it), Janis Joplin (so overrated), Axl Rose and Steven Tyler.

The man's range is extraordinary but the emotion he manages to convey in that range is a whole nother level.

    I would like to see RS's criteria for determining "great" and "singer".b, 21b, 21Calling Dylan a singer is a stretch. Calling him a great singer only works if you believe, as Doc W does, that writing and recording great songs make you a great singer. b, 21b, 21Lennon was never more than a competent singer.b, 21b, 21Is Leonard Cohen on this list?b, 21Tiny Tim?b, 21Pavarotti? b, 21Yma Sumac?b, 21Elvis Costello?b, 21b, 21Is it really just a list of singers that Rolling Stone likes in the order that they like them?
