font class="post"1b,121b,121b,121But true.b, 21b, 21I was discussing the election at lunch, and I said that for the longest time I didn't believe it was possible to beat the Republicans. It's like a huge weight being lifted (he says with finger crossed. knocking wood etc.)

  • real talk. my voting is at a kindergarden and while I was walking in I saw a group of them outside. I was thinking "i'mma do this for you little homies...."b, 21b, 21I sat and simply starred at my marked box for a few minutes and tear'd up.

Word... and I am ashamed, but willing to admit that if weren't for the Strut, I probably wouldn't even be voting. I've always ignored politics. I've simply never cared before... and I've never needed to care... things are all good in my world. Now I realize how selfish that is thanks to you all or y'all or yous guys. I'll take whatever bashing comes with my past attitude towards it all with open arms img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" 21b,121b,121But I'm still not going to get involved in any discussions... baby steps, baby steps!

An old neighborhood buddy of mine said "Happy Obama Day!" on my way from the polls.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Waiting in line with about 500 or more folks for three hours in the rain was pretty moving. I think everyone was feeling the importance of their vote this morning. Apparently 40% of registered voters in VA had cast a ballot by 10AM. b, 21b, 21I got a little tear going when a change is gonna come came on my ipod.

A lot of older folks in my precinct at the polls this morning, and without exception, they were dragging kids, grandkids, nephews, nieces, etc out of bed and getting them to vote. You heard people talking about Alabama in the 50s and 60s, you heard talk of boycotts and being last in line for vaccine shots until all the white folks got theirs first. I had strangers introducing themselves to me and telling me how excited they were to be there making history. One woman was telling the people next to her how blessed she felt to have a job to go to afterward, and how nothing was going to stop her from voting and then living today to the fullest. The same woman grabbed my arm and said "God Bless You" as I walked my ballot up to the machine. As voting goes, it is certainly the biggest day of my life so far, and it taxes the imagination to think of something that would eclipse it in that arena. It certainly makes me proud to be a part of my community, and of course, MY country.b,121b,121A lot of people sacrificed to get to this point, and someone always has to lose the race. But just the fact that so many more people are engaged is really a bright light shining out of the deep dark cavern of the last 8 years. Let's hope it bodes well for Obama today and the future for all of us.

font class="post"1b,121b,121the sad part is, dude prolly doesn't give a schitt!b, 21b, 21he got his EIGHT years and will retire a rich man.b, 21b, 21I don't think he really even likes McCain, so not seeing him win will not bother dude.b,121b,121AND he gets to unload the giant mess he created on Obama.b,121b,121going forward, blame for his disaster of a war will be shared with Obama, who is inheriting it and will be tasked with crafting what will surely be an imperfect solution to it.b,121b,121all told I bet he's somewhere between "whatever" and "shit yeah; I'm outta here!"

font class="post"1b,121b,121It is historic in a good way. As I said yesterday, tomorrow will be a more perfect day in a more perfect union. b, 21b, 21I look forward to seeing Democrats govern. I think 8 years out of power has narrowed the focus and eroded the trust of many of my more liberal friends. When Obama tells the nation that Iran really is building a nuke, which he has said on the trail, the left will not have an easy option to dismiss this as war propaganda. There will still be a global war and Obama has--according to his campaign-no plans to end it. Obama will have to make hard choices that will appear at times to abandon whatever progressive principles his progressive supporters believed he holds. If he is to be a great president, he will have to forgo his party's dream to nationalize healthcare and focus on reducing the debt that Bush rang up. He will realize that the op-ed pages of Europe do not necessarily reflect the actual wishes of Europe's intelligence and foreign ministries. At a certain point, the media will toughen up on him and try to tear him down like they do with every president. There will be the vagaries that come with power, the petty scandals. It will all seem very normal, I think. Except for one thing. The president will be black. And that is a testament to America's exceptional and enduring example to the nations.

  • I've been calling down to Virginia since yesterday afternoon. Unherd came through last night and hit Florida. We shared some beers, some whiskey, and fought the good fight.b, 21b, 21I called to Virginia again today, and will continue for another hour or so.b, 21b, 21You guys did a good job down there - I have been met overwhelmingly with people who are either voting today or had already voted. I talked to a fair number of retiree-age folks who had either never voted for a Democrat or never voted at all. On the other side, one man told me "nobody in this house is going to vote for Obama. No sir."b, 21b,121I voted this morning in central Brooklyn. The crowd was average. The polls near me uptown were MOBBED. The excitement was palpable. There are bleachers set up on 125th & Adam Clayton Powell, and a jumbotron. It's going down tonight.b, 21b, 21This is not going to sink in for a while.
