Volkswagen- reliable or not?

My Civic has 228,000 and counting- running great- but would like a new car and give ole betsy a break. I'm so used to low gas milage, little maintenance, and no engine troubles. Am I giving the VW too much credit and saying it would last as long as my Honda- even giving it the proper maintenance on it?b,121b,121Anyone with a VW...what's your experience(s)? b, 21b, 21I like this new ride though!b,121b,121b,121 img src="http://static.taume.com/image/2009-Volkswagen-Passat-CC-Top.jpg"1

had 72 beetle that was insane: notorious for being able to run while "needing a tune-up" for years...b,121b,121my girlfriend has a 08 Jetta. Raggedy ass Jetta for sure, they've slipped. I tried to convince her that they'd fallen in all the consumer ratings for X amount of years (I think they lost it somewhere in the early 90s), but she wasn't having it. Told me to go back on the internet. b, 21b, 21Compared to a Civic, F it. VW's have been overpriced for a long time, but now it's not even worth it to go with the "German engineering" or whatever you can say when you have one...

I say not. Our '99 Beetle can be counted on to require at least $1000 in maintenance per year, whereas my '96 Sentra is ugly and boring but I easily spend less than $300 a year on it.

font class="post"1b,121b,121VW CC?b,121b,121These look nice man, i somewhat looked into them, fully equiped (leather, navigation, and upgrade to v6) for about 40k, pretty good for a car of its size. Previous to this car, i would have never considered a VW. I still havent switched from japanese engineering though, they have been too dependable for me. But i switch cars every 3 years or so anyways, typically before any real problems occur.

  • I have a five year old Jetta and it's just starting to break down.b, 21Had a Toyota before that and it went over 240,000 miles before I gave it away to a family that needed a car.b, 21b, 21VWs are great for the first 3-4 years.b, 21Great handling, tight German suspension, etc.b, 21More fun to drive than my Toyota for sure.b, 21But from what I've heard they basically build VWs and BMWs to sort of only last in that great state for the first 5 and then things slowly start to go downhill.b,121b,121Don't think I would buy another one (although I might consider leasing since I wouldn't be stuck with it).

  • no, no, and no.

  • notb,121b,121electric and jinky plastic shit goes quick on newer VWs

  • I bought my first car less than a month ago: 1970 Autostick Beetle. Few hundred thousand miles on an original engine, and it still runs perfectly. I have no idea about their new vehicles, but I'm psyched about my old bug!

font class="post"1b,121b,121i can't speak for VWs made now (aren't they made in the czech republic now?) but my dad has had a 68 beatle since he bought it new, and it starts up after sitting around for 2 years on the first crank. that thing probably has 500,000 miles on it too (the odometer broke in 1973 at 60,000). it is the most reliable car i've ever seen. nowadays i think japanese cars rule US/european cars faces.b, 21b, 21oh yeah and what ever you buy, DO NOT BUY A SAAB!

  • paging Kon!

  • just sold my '99 vw passat. i'd stick with honda (i did). The VW's are nice looking cars and run smooth, but be prepared for massive maintenance costs, higher gas costs, and around here- issues with even finding a place to work on them (even simple things like oil changes). my experience with vw was that they are very sensitive and require lots of expensive maintenance.

font class="post"1b,121b,121No worse than most. Oil and filters every 6K, as you should with any car.b, 21b,121I have two 9-5's with over 300K between them. Nothing big has failed. Only recent big spend was fixing an oil leak on the timing case, which is an engine-out job. Seal is ??50, labour is a day and a half wherever you trust to do it img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" 21 .b, 21b,121Other than that, they have been, and still are, hella rapid, not bad on petrol (for 250hp engines) and tick the needful box of being able to carry a lot of junk from A to B on the regular.b, 21b,121SaabCentral.com have all the info you need to diagnose/fix most of the niggles.

Audi=VW. Same people, different bodies.b, 21b,121I had a VW that I got brand new, and it was nothing but problems the whole time. Add to that the fact that you can't bring it to most mechanics--they don't have the parts, and the engine is literally packaged in all kinds of crazy plastic shit making the different parts incredibly difficult to access--and it's really a no brainer. VW moved their manufacturing plant to Mexico in the early 90s and that was basically the end of it. I traded my GTI for a Mazda MPV and couldn't have been happier.

VW's are great while they're under warranty. Recommend selling them before it's up. I've had like 10 Hondas, and I have to say that Honda knows how to build a good machine. I'm driving a 95 Mazda at the moment, and it's been really solid too.
