So is this their newest line of attack? Drudge posted this "BOMBSHELL" audio yesterday of Obama mentioning redistribution of wealth and it looks like the Republicans are running with it full speed. "Socialist": the new "N" word...b, 21b, 21object width="425" height="344"1param name="movie" value=""1/param1param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"1/param1embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"1/embed1/object1b,121b, 21

It's not going to stick. I swear though I watched that video that you posted yesterday and looking at these people and the way they're all "Commie this" and "Commie that" I was thinking what the F*ck is this 1956?

The GOP has been pushing the socialist tag for a week, and it's really not gaining traction with anyone besides the hardcore party faithful. Yet another in a long series of failed strategies. They're grasping at straws in a last-ditch effort to change the game, and switching up constantly when shit doesn't stick. Some might call it....erratic.b,121b, 21 img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /1

At this point I am not worried about anything other than voter disenfranchisement.

font class="post"1b,121b, 21Absolutely. I have to hand it to the Republicans???their manipulation of the voter rolls is yet another example of the effectiveness of their election machine. They're masters of realpolitik, domestically and abroad.

apparently tax breaks for the wealthy = pro-America

And Obama's rebuff has been succinct and dead on: "Was John McCain a Socialist in 2000 when he proposed the same tax cuts?"b, 21b, 21b,121 img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/breakface.gif" alt="" /1

How large do you think the precentage is of those who feel they are wealthy enough to have something to be "spread around" as compared to the precentage of those who feel like they would rather benefit from a redistribution of wealth?b, 21b, 21I somehow think that the republicans are shooting themselves into the foot and are in fact campaigning for Obama instead of against him.

font class="post"1b,121b, 21This has always been completely baffling to me. As far as I can see it, people either aren't able to discern if a raise in a tax bracket affects them, or they prefer to think of themselves as always maybe getting rich.

font class="post"1b,121b, 21b, 21More than can statistically be possible. See also: American Dream.b,121b, 21in 2000 some dude I worked with, making half as much as me, told me he voted for the dumb guy because the smart guy wanted to F*ck with his bank account. f*ckin dipshit. Many Americans on the corporate ladder feel they are only a couple of promotions away from living a CEO lifestyle, golf, loafers, etc. This is why they think corporations have their best interests at heart. They feel more solidarity with their employers than they do with their peers in other industries. I have worked at at least half a dozen NYSE/NASDAQ listed companies and they are all like that.

the perception of what tax money is being spent on is also completely skewed - the GOP tries to turn out the racist vote by making noise about 'welfare' & 'handouts' while our overseas wars are the biggest handout / boondoggle there is - see: Haliburton, KBR etc

font class="post"1b,121b, 21This line of attack worked well for the GOP when taxes were much higher in the late 70s. But fewer people today believe that they are winning in this economy. Still, betting on Americans hating the rich is a dubious proposition.

Still, betting on Americans hating the rich is a dubious proposition. b, 21b, 21h,121font class="post"1b,121b, 21All very true, but I can still see this working somewhat. Not the whole "OMG COMMIEZ!" thing, but just that pretty much everybody feels as though they pay too much in taxes. Telling those people that they're right certainly appeals to them, and then you couple that with "...and Obama thinks you should pay even *more* in taxes!" is a good scare that could push the proverbial low-information voter toward McCain.b, 21b, 21Is it a lie? Sure. But we're talking about a campagin that continues to repeat the "will raises taxes on people making $42,000 a year" lie even after it has repeatedly, publically debunked. Truth doesn't mean a whole hell of a lot.

I'm still reeling at the sheer number of US political commentators, both pro- and am- , whose understanding, knowledge and, more importantly, first-hand experience of socialism probably doesn't amount to much more than a theoretical one, yet are acting like it can be summarised as "commies/welfare/handouts". These people are f*cking idiots. America has never had socialism, and probably never will. For a developed nation, however, it does have a disproprtionate amount of people who can't afford to get sick, or afford a decent stanard of education or a decent home. Anyone who thinks Obama is a socialist - in fact, anyone who thinks there is a single, genuine democratic socialist in the whole of Washington - belongs in a rubber room.

I have a hard time believing that they believe it themselves. While I'm sure some are genuinely panicked, I think most commentators are more cynical, who see invoking "socialism" or "marxism" as a strategic dog whistle to get Americans angry that their hard earned money will end up helping welfare moms buy Cadillacs. b, 21b, 21Part of me thinks they know if Americans get something like national healthcare, and our entire society doesnt in fact crumble, it will open the door to even more (potentially successful) government programs. They don't want to make the same mistake they did with Social Security, where once people saw it as a functioning, normal part of American life, they are resistant to any attempt to roll it back. For these commentators, screaming "socialist" is a way to avoid what they see as the "slippery slope"....
