Daptone Family - Thoughts?

It's been a minute since I last saw any Daptone related shows, the last being Sharon Jones I think about a year ago. Anyway I am going to this tonight:b,121b,121Thu. 10/23b,121Daptone Family Fundraiser for Barack Obamab,121featuring the Budos Band and Naomi Shelton and the Gospel Queensb,121plus very special guests from the Daptone Stable, as well as DJ's Honeydripper, TNT and Neal Sugarmanb,121$20 adv./$25 d.o.s/b1b,121b, 21And I am not certain if I've really even heard much of any of these folks. Now I fully expect the show to be fresh, but was curious to hear any Strut reviews on Budos Band, Naomi etc.b,121b, 21thanks in advance

    I saw Budos Band in NYC in January and is was seriously one of the best shows I have ever seen.

    The distinctive thing about the one Budos Band that I've heard was that everything was in a weird minor key, giving the songs a noirish soundtrack feel. (That's not a complaint, BTW; it sounds good...) b,121b,121Now, I don't know if they do that all the time, or whether it was just for that one album (i1The Budos Band II[/i]), but that was the one standout fact for me...

    font class="post"1b,121b, 21That minor key-ness really seems to ramp up on the first three songs of side one of Budos II, they build up to Ride Or Die and it pays off. Then there's some mellower stuff in the middle and more really dark minor stuff at the end.     font class="post"1b,121b, 21I always thought that was because Budos seemed highly influenced by Ethiopian jazz, which tends to use a pentatonic scale, hence the "weird minor key."

    font class="post"1b,121b, 21True that. But not just your normal run-of-the-mill pentatonic scales... Ethiopian jazz (and a lot of European gypsy music for that matter) use modes within those tonality... starting the basic scales from different root notes... and they have some scales sounds using lots of chromatic leading notes.b,121b,121I'm sure there some theory stuff around to eplain it all, but stack up those scales into chords and you're on that way to that sound.b,121b,121As for the rhythmic basis - that is WAY deep. UNTEACHABLE.

    Yeah, Budos definitely kill it on the live tipb, 21b, 21had the pleasure of seeing them perform in London earlier this year at the Jazz cafe, supporting Antibalasb,121b, 21b, 21Daptone always comes correct b,121b, 21b, 21Anyone know as to whether Lee Fields has any imminent releases. Would love to hear a new LP from him

    I have nothing but good things to say about daptone, really there's nothing I've heard that I don't like. I'm a big fan of the Budos, Sharon jones and Menanhan. For any Toronto heads there's a Sharon Jones show at the guverment next wednesday oct29.     font class="post"1b,121b, 21These days Dap shows are at the bigger venues in NYC and always well attended but up to a couple of years ago you could catch them at small places for free when they were playing much bigger venues in Europe and getting paid. NY is rough like that.b,121b, 21Generally people in NYC go apeshit for anything that's from somewhere else and are clueless about good stuff that is right in front of their faces. This is why Vicemag works so well and why NYC is pretty irrelevant these days.
