From what I've seen (and others should feel free to correct me), the heyday of guajiras were the 1960s and it's pretty easy to find them being recorded throughout the decade on any given Latin LP. b,121b,121One of Ray Barretto's lesser known LPs, back when he was on Tico (before he joined Fania) was an album "Guajira y Guaguanco" which has some nice, groovin' guajiras, including "GuaJira Soul." In fact, most of Barretto's 1960s albums for Tico and UA Latino had at least a couple of guajiras. b,121b,121Same should be the case for Pete Rodriguez's LPs from the same era (mid-60s onward). I've always thought of his classic, "Micaela" as a guajira though it's a bit faster in tempo. b,121b,121If I was at home, I'd flip through some records and pull up some other titles (I had been meaning to do a blog post on guajiras for the longest so the timing is good).
