ANCHORAGE, Alaska ??? Gov. Sarah Palin charged the state for her children to travel with her, including to events where they were not invited, and later amended expense reports to specify that they were on official business.b,121b,121The charges included costs for hotel and commercial flights for three daughters to join Palin to watch their father in a snowmobile race, and a trip to New York, where the governor attended a five-hour conference and stayed with 17-year-old Bristol for five days and four nights in a luxury hotel.b,121b,121In all, Palin has charged the state $21,012 for her three daughters' 64 one-way and 12 round-trip commercial flights since she took office in December 2006. In some other cases, she has charged the state for hotel rooms for the girls.b,121b,121Alaska law does not specifically address expenses for a governor's children. The law allows for payment of expenses for anyone conducting official state business.b,121b,121As governor, Palin justified having the state pay for the travel of her daughters ??? Bristol, 17; Willow, 14; and Piper, 7 ??? by noting on travel forms that the girls had been invited to attend or participate in events on the governor's schedule.b,121b,121But some organizers of these events said they were surprised when the Palin children showed up uninvited, or said they agreed to a request by the governor to allow the children to attend.b,121b,121Several other organizers said the children merely accompanied their mother and did not participate. The trips enabled Palin, whose main state office is in the capital of Juneau, to spend more time with her children.b,121b,121"She said any event she can take her kids to is an event she tries to attend," said Jennifer McCarthy, who helped organize the June 2007 Family Day Celebration picnic in Ketchikan that Piper attended with her parents.b,121b,121State Finance Director Kim Garnero told The Associated Press she has not reviewed the Palins' travel expense forms, so she could not say whether the daughters' travel with their mother would meet the definition of official business.b,121b,121After Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain chose Palin his running mate and reporters asked for the records, Palin ordered changes to previously filed expense reports for her daughters' travel.b,121b,121In the amended reports, Palin added phrases such as "First Family attending" and "First Family invited" to explain the girls' attendance.b,121b,121"The governor said, 'I want the purpose and the reason for this travel to be clear,'" said Linda Perez, state director of administrative services.b,121b,121When Palin released her family's tax records as part of her vice presidential campaign, some tax experts questioned why she did not report the children's state travel reimbursements as income.b,121b,121The Palins released a review by a Washington attorney who said state law allows the children's travel expenses to be reimbursed and not taxed when they conduct official state business.b,121b,121Taylor Griffin, a McCain-Palin campaign spokesman, said Palin followed state policy allowing governors to charge for their children's travel. He said the governor's office has invitations requesting the family to attend some events, but he said he did not have them to provide.b,121b,121In October 2007, Palin brought daughter Bristol along on a trip to New York for a women's leadership conference. Plane tickets from Anchorage to La Guardia Airport for $1,385.11 were billed to the state, records show, and mother and daughter shared a room for four nights at the $707.29-per-night Essex House hotel, which overlooks Central Park.b,121b,121The event's organizers said Palin asked if she could bring her daughter.b,121b,121Alexis Gelber, who organized Newsweek's Third Annual Women & Leadership Conference, said she does not know how Bristol ended up attending. Gelber said invitees usually attend alone, but some ask if they can bring a relative or friend. b,121b,121Griffin, the campaign spokesman, said he believes someone with the event personally sent an e-mail to Bristol inviting her, but he did not have it to provide. Records show Palin also met with Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Goldman Sachs representatives and visited the New York Stock Exchange. b,121b,121In January, the governor, Willow and Piper showed up at the Alaska Symphony of Seafood Buffet, an Anchorage gala to announce winners of an earlier seafood competition. b,121b,121"She was just there," said James Browning, executive director of Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation, which runs the event. Griffin said the governor's office received an invitation that was not specifically addressed to anyone. b,121b,121When Palin amended her children's expense reports, she listed a role for the two girls at the function ??? "to draw two separate raffle tickets." b,121b,121In the original travel form, Palin listed a number of events that her children attended and said they were there "in official capacity helping." She did not identify any specific roles for the girls. b,121b,121In July, the governor charged the state $2,741.26 to take Bristol and Piper to Philadelphia for a meeting of the National Governors Association. The girls had their own room for five nights at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel for $215.46 a night, expense records show. b,121b,121Expense forms describe the girls' official purpose as "NGA Governor's Youth Programs and family activities." But those programs were activities designed to keep children busy, a service provided by the NGA b,121b,121to accommodate governors and their families, NGA spokeswoman Jodi Omear said. b,121b,121In addition to the commercial flights, the children have traveled dozens of times with Palin on a state plane. For these flights, the total cost of operating the plane, at $971 an hour, was about $55,000, according to state flight logs. The cost of operating the state plane does not increase when the children join their mother. b,121b,121The organizer of an American Heart Association luncheon on Feb. 15 in Fairbanks said Palin asked to bring daughter Piper to the event, and the organizer said she was surprised when Palin showed up with daughter Willow and Bristol as well. b,121b,121The three Palin daughters shared a room separate from their mother at the Princess Lodge in Fairbanks for two nights, at a cost to the state of $129 per night. b,121b,121The luncheon took place before Palin's husband, Todd, finished fourth in the 2,000-mile Iron Dog snowmobile race, also in Fairbanks. The family greeted him at the finish line. b,121b,121When Palin showed up at the luncheon with not just Piper but also Willow and Bristol, organizers had to scramble to make room at the main table, said Janet Bartels, who set up the event. b,121b,121"When it's the governor, you just make it happen," she said. b,121b,121The state is already reviewing nearly $17,000 in per diem payments to Palin for more than 300 nights she slept at her own home, 40 miles from her satellite office in Anchorage. b,121b,121Tony Knowles, a Democratic former governor of Alaska who lost to Palin in a 2006 bid to reclaim the job, said he never charged the state for his three children's commercial flights or claimed their travel as official state business. b,121b,121Knowles, who was governor from 1994 to 2002, is the only other recent Alaska governor who had school-age children while in office. b,121b,121"There was no valid reason for the children to be along on state business," said Knowles, a supporter of Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. "I cannot recall any instance during my eight years as governor where it would have been appropriate to claim they performed state business." b,121b,121Knowles said he brought his children to one NGA event while in office but didn't charge the state for their trip. b,121b,121In February 2007, the three girls flew from Juneau to Anchorage on Alaska Airlines. Palin charged the state for the $519.30 round-trip ticket for each girl, and noted on the expense form that the daughters accompanied her to "o
pen the start of the Iron Dog race." b,121b,121The children and their mother then watched as Todd Palin and other racers started the competition, which Todd won that year. Palin later had the relevant expense forms changed to describe the girls' business as "First Family official starter for the start of the Iron Dog race." b,121b,121The Palins began charging the state for commercial flights after the governor kept a 2006 campaign promise to sell a jet bought by her predecessor. b,121b,121Palin put the jet up for sale on eBay, a move she later trumpeted in her star-making speech at the Republican National Convention, and it was ultimately sold by the state at a loss. b,121b,121That left only one high-performance aircraft deemed safe enough for her to use ??? a 1980 twin-engine King Air assigned to the public safety agency but, according to flight logs, out of service for maintenance and repairs about a third of the time Palin has been governor.

font class="post"1Um, people should care because it's a misuse of state funds and reflects poorly not only on her character but her knowledge and capacity in an executive position.

Sorry, she took her kids with her on trips. That must have cost the state thoooouuuusands.b,121b,121just don't care.

font class="post"1So as long as the amount is small, it's okay to misuse taxpayer's money?

font class="post"1b,121b,121b,121I f*cking care. When she was mayor of Wasilla she fought to make rape victims pay for their own rape kits (did I mention Alaska has twice the rate of rapes as the rest of the US?) but she has no problem making the taxpayer pick up the tab for her daughters to go see their dad race snowmobiles?? And then when people start asking questions she tries to change the documentation? Yeah, she's quite a "maverick"...obviously people shouldn't expect handouts from the government, unless they're rich and powerful.

  • this is just another case of a plucky hockey mom doing what she had to do in the face of a cold, elitist bureaucracy that will never understand the sanctity of life nor the joy of child-rearing. real moms know the deal.

When she was Mayor rape victims had to pay for the forensic rape kits and medical examination. There is no evidence that she fought for or against or even knew about that rule. b,121b,121As for her ripping off the state. It comes at no surprise. She has fought members of her own party so she could get their job and abuse it even more than they did.

font class="post"1b,121b,121"Lawmakers became involved in 2000 when reports began coming in that police departments were charging sexual assault victims for the kits and the forensic exams, which cost from $300 to $1,200 at the time. The kit, a package of sample containers, swabs and other medical supplies, is used to collect evidence from women after they are attacked.b,121b,121Then-Gov. Tony Knowles said Thursday that Wasilla was unique in the state in charging rape victims for the cost of doing the law enforcement necessary for solving the crime.b,121b,121The bill passed the Legislature over the objections of Wasilla police chief Charlie Fannon, who said it would require the city to come up with more money to cover the costs of buying the rape kits and doing the exams."b,121b,121b,121You're right that there's no proof of her being involved, but you're going to tell me the mayor of a small town has no knowledge of what the police chief is doing? At worst she was on board, at best she did nothing to change the practice...

personally I'm not too concerned about her personal affiliations, just like I'm not concerned with Obama's. What they do on their free time is their business. What does bother me is official misconduct, and she seems to have perpetrated an abundance of it, and there's probably more that hasn't been unearthed yet.

  • I'm more interested in Obama's tax returns seeming to demonstrate a blatant violation of illinois ethics act( a href="http://volokh.com/archives/archive_2008_03_23-2008_03_29.shtml#1206496543" target="_blank"1see here). Yet despite Ap dropping this bombshell on sarah palin taking her kids with her on state business, and their FALSE reports that she was found guilty of breaking ethics rules, the Ap has shown no interest in this story at all, eventhough Obama's tax returns have been available for months.

And speaking of Palin and $...b,121b,121b,121Since her selection as John McCain's running mate, the Republican National Committee spent more than $150,000 on clothing and make-up for Gov. Sarah Palin, her husband, and even her infant son, it was reported on Tuesday evening.b,121b,121Palin has received the equivalent of $2,500 in clothes per day[/b] from places such as Saks Fifth Avenue (where RNC expenditures totaled nearly $50,000) and Neiman Marcus (where the governor had a $75,000 spree).b,121b,121To put it another way: b1Palin received more valuable clothes in one month than the average American household spends on clothes in 80 years.[/b] A Democrat put it in even blunter terms: her clothes were the cost of health care for 15 or so people.

  • I would expect the Obama camps spending on clothes/make-up to be similar. This is just the way politics works. Though maybe if your boy hadn't broken his promise on public funding we would see less of this kind of stuff.

font class="post"1b,121b,121How does this even register as a logical connection in your mind?b,121On second thought, I don't think I want to know...

  • Easy. Public funding means the campaigns are spending tax payer's money and would be subsequently more wary of spending large amounts on things as ostensibly frivolous as clothes/make-up. Add in the fact that public funding is strictly limited and the kinds of things you can spend the money on are restricted and the logical connection is quite obvious.

  • Obama on his pledge to accept public fundingb,121b,121"Senator John McCain has already pledged to accept this fundraising pledge. If I am the Democratic nominee, I will aggressively pursue an agreement with the Republican nominee to preserve a publicly financed general election."b,121b,121However as soon as it becomes clear that he will have the edge in private funding over McCain he coincidently discovers thatb,121b,121"the public financing of presidential elections as it exists today is broken, and we face opponents who've become masters at gaming this broken system."

STRETCHINGb,121b,121*Gee, maybe we wouldn't need to spend $150,000 on clothes for the vice presidential nominee and her family if Barack Obama would have just accepted public financing.*b,121b,121Did this one get forwarded down from the top? b,121b,121img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/weaksauce.gif" alt="" 21b,121b,121I personally am not surprised -- if a campaign can spend millions on crafting a good advertisement, they better be able to make sure their candidate looks good, and that she isn't wearing off-the-track pantsuits from the Wasilla Wal-Mart. Gotta at least look the part -- she certainly ain't sounding it.

font class="post"1b,121b,121b,121Especially thousands and thousands of small donations from reg'lar folks. The reason Obama has so much money to spend is because so many people want to see him win.b,121One small, anecdotal reason I see McCain going down the shitter, is the only place I'm seeing McCain signs (with one exception being one sign on my block) is on the lawns of the wealthy. I had to take a drive up through Middletown/Navesink (very affluent Northern Monmouth County area) and was hit by how many McCain signs popped up all of a sudden, and then subsequently disappeared as soon as I crossed the highway into the less affluent part of town.

font class="post"1b,121b,121I see that understanding shit is not your forte. When did I say I was outraged about it? What I said was quite clear. I said a)that obama broke his pledge to accept public funding and b)if he had followed through on his pledge then the type of campaign spending some claim to be appalled by would be less frequent(I say claim because its pretty evident this is just a stick to hit palin with and if Obama were to announce spending on clothes three times as large they wouldnt give a shit)

It'll be interesting to see how this Palin clothing story picks up steam, especially after all the brouhaha over John Edwards $400 haircuts. b,121b,121Interesting, the Pew Research Center's latest poll finds that the folks most skeptical about Palin are women under 50, a dynamic many of you predicted back when she was nominated. b,121b,121a href="http://people-press.org/report/462/obamas-lead-widens" target="_blank"1http://people-press.org/report/462/obamas-lead-widens
