i'm emailing some people back and forth trying to see if its worth my time to drive 15 minutes to look at a 'collection' of 30 records...the $$$ this person thinks her records are worth was so shocking i had to post the email on soul strut:b,121/font1

b,121Our records are quite a mix. Some from my in-laws (albums) and the singles are approximately in number of 40. Other than Buddy Holly, there is Peter, Paul & Mary, Billy Joel, Simon and Garfunkel, Teresa Brewer, Herb Albert, Peter Nero, Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond, Ray Coniff, etc. etc. Is this enough info?? Today I took time to "look up" some of the titles (unable to find some) and using the "mid" monetary value, the total was $297.00. Of course, this total does not reflect any shipping and handling if one was to purchase on-line. Our plans are to move in the near future and have decided to size down, therefore looking at all the stuff that we pack and unpack and never use. Thanks so much. We look forward to your response.

Another thing to consider is that when people are rattling off what's in their stack, they'll NEVER mention the couple vaulable records they have. This is because people equate popularity with value which runs counter to how the record game generally works. If its rock they're not going to tell you about the $500 private psych masterpiece their ex-cousin-in-law was a part of, only their hot pieces like Elton John, BIlly Joel, etc....

  • Please to post some reply's as to when you had to actually tell them that their collection is crap.b,121b,121Usually it's the hardest part of working in a record store (or going to look at a collection), because you don't want to offend (most don't, at least) anyone directly but ultimately, you're telling someone that their knowledge of and taste in music is pretty lame.b,121b,121"Well, I can give you about $.50 a record?"b,121b,121"WHAT! There's a JOHN LENNON in there. He was in the BEATLES...?"

  • i really don't even want to reply. not worth it to waste any more time with her or waste any gas hoping that she has anything good.

font class="post"1b,121b,121I can't believe you even thought of that twice. $297,00 for about 40 records/turds. It's not even an option. If someone comes at me with that kind of BS there's no f*ckin way I'm even bothering.

How exactly does this differ from 98% of the records posted on craigslist?

  • ostost Montreal 1,375 Posts
In my opinion you can tell a lot about someone's approach or position when they start off like that. I've had some very good experiences with Craiglist and have had some bad ones. The latter usually involved people coming off that way. So from personal experience I rather not waste my time on ten shitty ass "collections" and focus on the one or two good ones that pop up every now and then.

  • i gave up on the craigslist game -- people are too clueless / ridiculous. i think the last thing i was trying to check out was this guy who had just acquired a few thousand 45's. I asked him the price range of them and he said to come over and look at them and then once i determine what i want, he'll look them up on ebay. b,121b,121 img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/NO.gif" alt="" 21

font class="post"1b,121b,121Bad play for him, but perhaps a good opportunity for you: I'm guessing that the man doesn't have knowledge of Popsike, and if you're into a rare niche market like Gospel or maybe Latin (not to mention Northern or Psych), he'll miss the range all together.

On the flip, I sold a heap of records on craigslist with very little effort (aside from lugging about 800 pounds of records up and down 5 stories). Bought them all from an antique dealer--mostly rawkus/and dance--had them on craigslist for 2 days and sold them for $200 profit. There are people out there looking to becomes DJs every day.

I look at it this way in order to post on Craigslist you have to have an computer therefore most people who post that they have records for sale on Craigslist have more than likely "looked them up" on Ebay which means they have some a href="mailto:bullsh@t"1bullsh@t/a1 idea of the price range they are looking for because most of these peole dont realize that they should have at least looked up completed (sold) Ebay listings . So most times I don't bother with Craigslist. I would rather post up fliers or put an ad in the classified section of the newspaper...
