  • Bill Moyers talked about this at the end of his show this weekb,121b,121a href="http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/09192008/watch3.html" target="_blank"1http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/09192008/watch3.html/a1b,121b,121/font1

But in fact there will be 5,000 fewer seats in the new stands.b,121b,121And while the Yankees reportedly have promised that half of what's left will cost $45 apiece or less, those seats that used to cost $250, right behind the dugout, will cost you $850. And if you want to be near home plate, you'll have to cough up $2,500...per game.b,121b,121Meanwhile, there will be more luxury suites and party rooms where the fat cats gather, safely removed from the sweaty masses. Corporations and wealthy individuals will be able to rent the luxury suites for anywhere from $600,000 to $850,000 tax deductible dollars a year, assuming they haven't filed for bankruptcy this week. b,121b,121h,121

  • Even though I realize the status of Yankee stadium in American history, I've never liked the Yankees, so I'm not really caring about this.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Yeah, I recognize the greats that played there over the years, but goddamn I'm tired of hearing about the Yankees this weekend. As if the Yankees don't get enough coverage from ESPN and the like, this weekend it's been wall-to-wall Yankee Stadium fellation. The AL East is coming down to the wire between the Red Sox and the Rays and yet ESPN still manages to make a big deal out of the Yankees despite them not making the postseason. Barf.

font class="post"1b,121b,121As a Sox fan, I could give a Fusk about the Yankees but as someone who genuinely has affection for the role that tradition plays in baseball and American life in general, this is just sad. And the naked greed on display with the new stadium just makes it worse. b,121b,121But hey, baseball's sentimentality has never rivaled its business needs.

I got the chance to go to both Yankee Stadium and Shea for the first and only times this year. It was an important thing to do as a lover of baseball and I was glad to check them out. I'm a New Yorker but I grew up in Philly so I have no interest in the Yanks, but that park was pretty dope. Shea was a dump, and I have always hated the Mets, but that was my kind of game and park (gully as Fusk - reminded me of The Vet.)b,121b,121But yeah, it totally fusking sucks. Real people can't afford tickets to any games in almost any sport these days.

font class="post"1 b,121b,121h,121font class="post"1b,121b,121Also a really good segment on this on the latest HBO Real Sports - season ticket holders in all sports getting charged exorbitant "personal seat licenses" to retain their tix when their teams move into new stadiums.

For all their talk of tradition you'd think Yankee management could have found a creative way to build more seating and/or revenue streams (like Bosox ownership has w/ Fenway) instead of shutting the place down. Sad.
