I bought a copy of this LP and can't tell for sure if it is a reissue or an original. Does anyone know how to tell for sure? I have never bought a "180 gram" reissue before, so I don't know whether or not they have bar codes or if they try to make them exact copies. Because of the the way some of the more popular titles are reissued to look exactly like the original, I would rather have an original that is a little beat up.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Albums didn't have bar codes until about 1978/1979, and Maggot Brain[/b] was long out of bring by then, didn't go back until print until Ace reissued it in the early 1990's.b,121b,121I believe vinyl was only done for the UK (along with the CD), and US Westbound came out with just the CD, I would think the labels themselves would indicate they are of UK origin, no? If not, look at the matrix #'s.

  • Didn't 20th Century repress Westbound in the mid 70s?

The OG is a gatefold and the reissue isn't.

font class="post"1b,121Compare your label to a label scan of the OG Maggot Brain. If your pressing includes "Whole Lot Of B.S." it is definitely a reissue. OG Funkadelics tend to have more of a matte finish, whereas my reissue was more on the glossy side...Some reissues do replicate OG tracklisting in the exact same order. I guess you could check the mastering of "Super Stupid" as it is heavy on gain and Eddie Hazel's guitar work came through extremely loud on the reissue. I guess you would check the font too...Of course everything on the front looks the same on both, so check the back.

font class="post"1b,121b,121The early 90's reissues also had the original track listing for the albums too.b,121b,121EDIT: Also by definition, the 180g reissues are heavier.

The original question didn't give any details as far as which company pressed it, but I would guess it can't be a Westbound OG since those aren't easy to come by and I doubt someone who acquired one would be perplexed about whether it is in fact an OG pressing.b,121b,121He made no reference to whether his copy is regular LP weight or heavier. I'm simply referring to the fact that some reissues have 10 songs. There are a lot of CDs floating around that have a 10-song listing.

  • original is housed in uni-pak??? cover. all pressings after(including 20th century/westbound) are not.b,121peace, stein. . . img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" 21

  • The label is Westbound, but I wasn't sure if the 90s repress or 180 gram were made to be exactly like the original. Also the vinyl is not heavy, I didn't think it was 180 gram, but I wasn't sure because I never purchase them. The problem is many reissues are made to look exactly like the original, especially popular/major titles.b,121b,121I'm pretty sure now that this copy is an OG pressing. Thanks for the info.
