i have latley found some quite interesting stuff on buddah, especially feeling the norman conners LPs and the baby huey album. i know this is a big and well known label and that i am pretty late to discover some of the better titles. anyway, besides the obvious (big) titles on buddah, what else is there worth to get?

font class="post"1b,121b,121I was going to touch on the subsidiaries too, but look at the list above. Some might seek the label for their bubble-gum and soul, but they had a lot of great stuff inbetween that. They were more than willing to try anything and everything, it was a mix of "let's try that" to "let's push that and make that a million seller". Not many labels were willing to release a song and say "let's just reverse it can call it our psychedelic A-side".b,121b,121a href="http://img397.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dialahitio5.jpg" target="_blank"1/a1b,121b,121With a list that has U.S. 69, Motherlode, Jules Blatner Group, Steve Kuhn, and New Birth (and let's not forget for a short time, Osibisa), they were doing something interesting before they closed down in the early 80's, formally introducing the world to the Disco 3 (a/k/a The Fat Boys).b,121b,121Here are the album discographies from Both Sides Now:b,121a href="http://www.bsnpubs.com/buddah/buddaha.html" target="_blank"1http://www.bsnpubs.com/buddah/buddaha.html/a1b,121a href="http://www.bsnpubs.com/buddah/buddahb.html" target="_blank"1http://www.bsnpubs.com/buddah/buddahb.html/a1b,121b,121/font1

This is gonna be a big thread come Monday me thinks.

  • Buddah has always been one of my favorite labels for the reasons Johmbolaya mentioned...they were obviously in the business of making hits, but they had a wild experimental streak, almost like Elektra (pre-1973) or Blue Thumb...here's a Buddah thread I started three years ago, and the first post should let you know how wide-ranging they were: a href="http://www.soulstrut.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=309320&an=0&page=160#Post309320" target="_blank"1http://www.soulstrut.com/ubbthreads/show...=160#Post309320/a1b,121b,121b,121...in the meantime, here's another lost Buddah classic: Denny Greene's "Lonely Town, Lonely Street", a Buddah single...this is an uptempo cover of the Bill Withers song, with raw private-press production and a sax that sounds like it was electrified and run through a wah-wah pedal. Good stuff. Normally, Greene was a member of Sha Na Na, the campy "rock revival" band who recorded for Buddah's Kama Sutra imprint, but this single is 180-degrees different.

  • Can't believe no one's mentioned curtdom yet.

I was quoting what was said above, but nonetheless a lot of those tracks were owned by Buddah, I believe someone else now owns everything Buddah ever released.

font class="post"1b,121b,121That came first, then came Buddah. Kama Sutra was its own label, distributed through MGM, then when it had some troubles, one of the guys decided to form Buddah. When Buddah was gaining a lot of attention, Kama Sutra left MGM and hooked up with Buddah, and that became permanent. Unlike Sussex and Hot Wax, Kama Sutra was more closer to Buddah than anything. As Buddah climbed to the charts, that's when they and their connections (through Neil Bogart) would be able to obtain masters and distribute various labels that would become a part of their umbrella. By the time the Fat Boys released their first records on Sutra, it was still a part of Buddah. Sutra managed to last for awhile.b,121b,121Sony now owns the entire Buddah catalog, or at least the master recordings, not sure about publishing.

Yeah, there is a Buddha pressing of baby Huey LP with the other Buddha label - pretty sure it was a UK pressing, but I have only ever found a coverless copy of it.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Can't go wrong with a 1910 best-of, either, but then again I dig their bubblegum stuff as well. But their Hard Ride LP is a really good attempt at psych, and I'll "ride hard" for that one as well.
