Wifey and I just got done looking at a condo that we're considering putting a bid in to purchase. We basically can get a very nice apartment for a steal of a price, thanks to the City of New York subsidized housing program. But, as someone who has lived in Brooklyn and has gotten accustom to this lifestyle and environment, I know NOTHING about Harlem and what's good up there.b,121b,121The spot is at 138th St. and Lenox Ave. (Malcolm X Blvd.) I walked from there to 125th and St. Nick today and saw all the sights, and was a little overwhelmed.b,121b,121So, anyone live in Harlem? Anyone know the score?

  • I'm on 127th/Madison. YOUR MONS N 'NEM is down around Marcus Garvey Park (Mount Morris section).b,121b,121The avenues are amazing. The buildings, the churches, the friggin SIDEWALK is the size of some entire streets elsewhere. I have always loved the architecture uptown. Very grand. It is so corny to say but honestly there is a real feeling of history in Harlem that I rarely find in other parts of the city these days.b,121b,121I have found the neighborhood to be mostly mellow, more so than many places I've been around in BK, however there are definitely pockets of wildness. b,121b,121Transportation is fine along the 4/5/6 Lex line, also you have the 2/3 up Lenox if you intend to go west side... for driving, the FDR and Henry Hudson/WSHighway are both easily accessible as is the Triborough, Willis Ave bridge which takes you up to the Deegan. and I never have a problem finding parking (vast improvement over Brooklyn IMO).b,121b,121The one major drawback is services - not a lot of great food options especially late night, and basic accomodations are around on 125 and to an extent 145 but it's not as easy as where you're at off Washington. I will say that Fairway is one of the best supermarkets city wide and it is convenient to Harlem locals... wifey and I have been hitting that up weekly and the fridge has never looked better. And we used to live in the village!b,121b,121All told though I am loving it. We were looking around over the summer and the value for the money uptown (versus Brooklyn) was a joke. For the rent we're paying in our 1.5 br on a brownstone block we would've been stuck with a studio in Bed Stuy.

Anyways, M*rs told me they were at the mall and dude started singing "I heard the thunnnnnder and I seen the lightnnnnnning..." from a KMD b-side (was it "What A Niggy Know?" I can't remember).b,121b,121Anyways, any one who will sing a song from a KMD b-side HAS to be a Real Head.
