Just a few highlights from the class lists at my daughter's school this year. Brothers and sisters have really taken it to the next level since I was growing up. The days of Deandre and Tamika are over. Shit is off the chain.b,121b,121Jazzminb,121Sircharlesb,121Xzahnib,121Mahoganyb,121Eboni'queb,121Zalazah

font class="post"1b,121b,121That's a beautiful name. At least it's a real word with both pleasing visual images (my grandfather used to be a wood worker before he went legally blind and taught me a lot about the different types of raer trees) and pop-culture familiarity. Nothing weird about that one. However, it would only work for a black woman, obviously.b,121b,121Not to rehash the famous George Carlin routine, but white women giving their spoiled, obnoxious offspring names of Indian tribes and Los Angeles suburbs is dumb. It sucks that all the formerly hot, film-noirish female names like Ava and Doris/Dorothy are now associated with senile old ladies.

"Doris" can never sound hot. There was a Doris at school where the wife went. Her mom was Jamaican and would always be shouting "DAAAAAAARIS" really loudly, which made the poor girl cringe.b,121b,121She's changed her name now.b,121b,121To LaShaQuaQua...

Brown wood could describe anyone.....PAUSE.b,121b,121Its gonna take a while for the 70's post Roots Neo-African names to be adapted by other folks.b,121b,121The Shenayes and La-Whatevers arent as prevalent these days. The game has changed.

There's a site (I forgot how to find) where you can look up number of times a first name is bestowed in a given year, I think it starts in the 60s... but its fun to look up names from pop culture, you can see a boom in Ciaras in the past few years for example...

Anyway my daughter has a pretty odd name for a white girl, Kathe (pronounced, Kay-tuh). So I ain't throwing bricks. One thing is black names have gotten a lot more syllabic and harder to say. There's all kinds of hyphenated business and lots Js tripping the tongue.b,121b,121Of course Mahogany is common and beautiful. b,121b,121Sircharles makes me think of those Right Guard commercials.b,121b,121As for God, b,121b,121 img src="object width="425" height="344"1param name="movie" value=""1/param1param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"1/param1embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"1/embed1

I guess the God thing could be 5%-related, but really using these words to describe one's kid is sacreligious in any traditional understanding of these faiths.
