Things to Do in Toronto...

The only time I've been to Toronto was in 2001 for Caribana. What do people do on the other days of the year? Should I do something really touristy and visit CN Tower? I leave tomorrow to visit a girlfriend and will be there until Sunday morning.

    Yeah I visited Toronot back in 2001 and there wasa cool record store called Cosmos records. Owner was really friendly and i bought quite a bit of stuff there. Anyone know if they're still around?

    best bets:



    bookstores: personal favourites are Swipe (design related) & Pages.



    food: Cantonese food by far, Toronto will be the best you can find outside of Hong Kong. A car would be handy since the best restaurants are in the burbs. PM if you want specific locations....



    music: free harbourfront events as mentioned. For other events check the free weeklies

    ps: summerlicious.....our version of restaurant week is happening right now. However, the best places (Canoe, Truffles, etc) are booked solid already.

    If you're , um, up later on Saturday a couple friends are throwing a non-house *party Saturday at 622a Richmond St (at Bathurst). I believe is an afro latin tinged event.



    Also, it's pedestrian day in Kensington market (a place you should visit regardless of this event) on Sunday where Jay and S*mon will be pumping bass and annoying those who attended the event above.



    If you're just sticking to downtown for records, I'd visit the various Queen St w places (Cosmos 416 603 0254, Rotate This, Neurotica, etc) where you'll no doubt be entranced in shoe/clothing shopathon. Walking over to Play De Vintage (416 971-PLAY) at Yonge and Gerrard is def worth it.

    im going to centre island all saturday and doing mushrooms for the first time in ages. i think recreational drugs is probably the best thing to do if youre in toronto

    I feel like I've been "outed."


    I will PM and e-mail tomorrow at work; I'm primarily interested in 1) food, and 2) trying to find a man for my friend, Lisa (she's cute and has a PhD in biochemistry). She suggested we check out something at the Fringe Festival.

    I'm really all aboot [sic] Chinese, Caribbean, most West African cuisine (fufu excepted), and any ethnic tradition known for making good beer. I'm willing to consider the random Burmese joint, too (that's for Oliver). Another girl, a hard core vegetarian, is joining us on Friday from New York, so we do have some dietary restrictions.

    We'll definitely have access to a car, so if you build it, we will come.

    AGK!! Why are you coming the weekend I'm not in town? I'm in Montreal this weekend. We could have shared a bottle of Jameson together. And not in a park either, I know you're more classy than that.

    Between Aser and KL's suggestions - you are so set. Fressen on Queen West, Udupi Palace on Gerrard in Little India and Cafe 668 on Dundas West, East of Bathurst at Denison, are good veg spots. Also Nazareth is a really good little Ethiopian spot on Bloor near Ossington that has good food and it usually turns into a great dance party later on.

    You really should be heading up to Eglinton West (at Oakwood) for Jamaican fare, it's only a 10 minute subway ride from University and Queen to Eglinton West Station.

    Oh shit! How could I forget? Mi Tierra at 828 St.Clair West is a great Colombian restaurant and El Bodegan on the SouthWest corner of College and Euclid is an amazing Peruvian restaurant. Both have limited selections for vegetarians, but very good food. The salsa at El Bodegan is bonkers!

    Hmm, I don't know any great chinese spots for veggies...

    Here are a few nice ones I've been to or have heard of...

    Ding Tai Fung Shanghai Dim Sum 3235 Hwy 7 in Markham.

    On Spadina there's Lee Garden 331 Spadina Ave. and Sang's Great Food 343 Spadina Ave.


    Really expensive, but worth it is Lai Wah Heen at the Metropolitan Hotel 108 Chestnut St.


    King's Garden 214 King St. W. Great duck... If thats ur thing.


    Two of my personal favs, which are tiny lil holes in the wall are...

    Kom Jug Yuen @ 371 Spadina and if ur in the area Yung Sing Pastry Shop @ 22 Baldwin St. (Go only early in the day. I think it closes at 3 and the food taste better early) is great for a lil walk in treat.


    I know you said Chinese, but also Buk Chang Dong Son To Fu @ 691 Bloor S. W. near Christie subway station is the bomb for Korean food. I'm all over the broiled Bulgogi and the various Soon dishes.

    Man, I could talk about food all day...

    it's at Pacific Mall, but outside in the parking lot, north corner. Mock meats is what's up! Prices are a little bit more expensive compared to regular Chinese spots, but oh so worth it. Here's a review in Eye



    I would also recommend Magic Wok for seafood (dinner only) and Lai Wah Heen for the upscale version.



    Chinatown is where the old guard is, some restaurants are not bad, but the best of the best are really all in the suburbs now.
