When I mentioned record store/head shop hybrids in the other thread, convincing my mom to take me to the shop up Lapalco in Gretna to wind up buying a Cheap Trick t-shirt when I was like 10 years old is a memory that I will never forget. The feathered roach clips and hideaway recepticles, Angus Young looking up at us from the record racks with that evil grin and devil horns, the smell of incense and porn cream...yep, those were the days. And beyond the jock-itch of the Kiss Army, Cheap Trick was most definitely running thangs. "I Want You to Want Me" was so much better to hear than Journey's "Loving Touching Squeezing" or Zeppelin's "All of My Love" blasting from the Pizza Inn jukebox."Surrender" was simply THE ANTHEM. And "Dream Police" was about as other-worldly as it got for a suburban kid not yet into smoking weed and such. Cheap Trick was a major part of my favorite movie from the time...
And if I don't pull out the following soundtrack out at least every few weeks to listen to "I Must Be Dreaming" on headphones, then there is something terribly wrong with me...
I know there are some bigtime Cheap Trick fans on here, so plaese to RIDE ON.

I completely ride for Cheap Trick, Up The Academy used that as the theme song too I remember. I think that's what it was called, the Mad Magazine movie?

i heart rick nielsen. i still have a guitar pick he threw into the audience with his cartoon likeness on it and I own several live performances on vhs and dvd.

I lost the one I caught at a Cheap Trick show at First Avenue in 1995 or '96. He was throwing them out so much I was astounded he had time to even play one of his guitars. He must have had at least 15 guitars just off stage, and the hardest working guitar tech on earth.
Dis anyone see the shows where they did their early LPs in full, one each night, and did three night stands? I was hoping to make the 'In Color' night, but missed it.

In my neighborhood, we even went as far as riding for One on One. We'd kinda freak when the She's Tight video would come on MTV.
Back in 1982 or 83 I went home to Atlanta for a weekend away from college. A friend of mine from Ohio named John (actually now the lead singer in Widespread Panic) came with me. We went out on a Saturday night looking to see a good live band. One of the best bar bands kicking around Atlanta in those days was a band called the Swinging Richards (not the first time that name has been used I'm sure) so we drove to this club in Buckhead to go see them. We pull into the back of the club and park by the kitchen door and the dumpster. As soon as we park this guy who we've never seen before sticks his head out the door and asks us "are you guys the coke connection?!!?" "Uh, no," we muttered back. Dissapointed, the guy closes the door and goes back into the club.
John and I decide to spark one up before we go inside. We're about half way through a nice joint when the busboy comes out with the trash. He smells our weed and asks us for a hit or two. So we smoke the guy out and he ends up letting us in through the kitchen door saving us the $5 cover.
Inside the place is packed and the crowd is amped. The band starts their set and we find out the reason for the coke and crowd: Robin Zander is singing with the band that night. Not sure if it was set up ahead of time but the band and Zander just kill it. They do one or two Cheap Trick tunes but its mostly covers including an insane punk take on the "Green Acres" theme song. After the set Zander stuck around with some skanky spandex coke whores. Since we couldn't offer any ass or coke we split shortly thereafter.

I was good friends with Ricks son Daxx and had many a sleepover/teenie spin the bottle party over at his mansion of a home. Rick never took off his hat, and even wore it to sleep.
Few more Cheap Trick related fun facts, which I think I dropped on here already:
Daxx is a badarse drummer, and is in the band A Fine Frenzy.
Bun E. Carlos is a big time garage 45 and LP record collector, and his brother Kurt is one of the biggest surf 45 collectors in the country.
My grandpa is Ricks lawyer.
