The throat specialist called it 2 steps beyond strep throat. I couldn't get into to see a doctor over the weekend, so much of that shit I just had to suffer through with only weak-ass Advil Migraine to help me. Yesterday, shit started to drain on its own and then to finish it off, I had a minor surgery performed on me.Before that, I hadn't been to see a doctor for anything me-related in like 8 years. But at least I'm finally beginning to get right. And the pain pills I finally got ahold of are pretty darned cool. I missed most of SXSW...but I did catch a panel Saturday afternoon and tomorrow when I have more time to post, I plan to go the fuck off on Soren Bitchass Baker. But yeah, I now know a really quick way to lose like 10-15 pounds. See y'all tomorrow.

Okay, I'm on for a minute...just long enough to say that for as much as I've whined about my own lil suffering, my heart was really with my sister who on Monday went through her second breast cancer surgery. Fortunately, things went about as well as they could for her.

But then this morning, I found out that over the weekend my co-worker/friend had this happen to her little brother...

    It's been a rough year.

  • Damn, Harvey.. that sounds like a really rough week. At least you're feeling better.

On the morning of my last day in Austin I woke up to an itchy throat, now I'm back at home with a seriously painful cough.

I pray I didn't catch the same thing as you, man! Though I do like me some crazy dreams.

So the cold sweat crazy dreams have now moved into narcotic crazy dreams...where I can go to sleep for a mere 15 minutes and feel like I just lived through a 3 hour action thriller. I already need to stop taking them shits though...

But yeah, one thing on the bright side...the CFO of the lil company I work for got hit and run by a truck while jogging about 3 months ago. Broke just about every bone in his body it seemed. We were really scared that he was going to wind up brain damaged. Well, dude is such a trooper...he showed up for a meeting yesterday with a mere neck brace and a cane...carrying a briefcase even.

On the flipside, what is up with Soren Baker? Fool came down here to moderate a panel discussion on Hip-Hop Politics with Davey D, Tech9, Salih & Tomar Williams, Chingo Bling, and a few others at the table...and what a condescending pile of East Coast waste he turned out to be. Worst offense was that he kept interrupting Salih...seemingly because Soren wasn't familiar enough with who he was.

The worst to me was this teenage girl asked a question about drugs in rap...and Salih responded by talking about it just being part of the landscape. Something to the effect of "I've never tasted syrup in my life, but I produced Barre Baby. I've never popped a hit of x in my life, but I produced Power Up." Soren then just interrupts the fuck out of him, says some shit about how there are no concequences to that sort of thing (WTF? DJ SCrew? Big Moe? Pimp C?) and then asks Tech9 to tell the girl about cocaine rap. After Tech was done saying whatever it was he was saying, the girl spoke up again and said "I was actually interested in hearing what Salih was saying about syrup."

But that was hardly the end of it...the way that Soren framed questions for particular artists was novice at best. He claimed that NYC still doesn't care about any music not made in NYC (it's funny when you hear a woman with a baby on her lap down the row loudly mark that as an outdated comment and then having your own woman with a baby on her lap slap the other woman a high-five for it). He cut off someone telling a heartfelt story about their school sucking by telling his own story about how in Baltimore he once got a school book that had a few pages ripped out of it. What an entire friggin joke that dude is...still wearing Timberlands talking in a contrived Fat Joe accent.

I mean, how badly could someone who kept saying "that's why we're all here, right?" not be able to speak our language at all. Davey D was kinda doing the same shit, up to the point that he condescendingly asked the crowd "who here even knows who George Washington Carver was? (the panel was held at the Carver Museum) and got booed for it. Then Davey quickly switched his steez from his working to fight corporations route to the let's do it with or without corporations route that Chingo was speaking on and 75% of the attendees in the room take on a daily basis.

Even my dude Matt who organized the event got boo'ed in one section for there not being any women on the panel (Jean Grea didn't show up as planned) and got straight up "shushed" by a dude who was asking a question from the crowd and didn't like that Matt kept trying to cut off his point.

Shit was mad brutal at the same time that it was mad interesting.

And for some positive biscuits, World Trade (Bavu, Element7d & Rochelle Terrell)who opened up the event with a performance were genuinely awesome and fully loved by the crowd. Also, the 2 dudes who instigated a brawl after a show in town the weekend before were photographed shaking hands in the hallway after the panel.

Not to re-start a region war or anything, but any of you still rolling with outmoded definitions and methods of dealing with hip-hop topics...don't even bother coming down here thinking we want to hear any of your high and mighty bullshit. Yes, Texas rap is way more than Mike Jones and Paul Wall. Y'all get a taste of the candy and y'all think y'all actually know what a barbeque is like. GTFOOHWTBS!

But yeah, dude who runs AllHipHop.com from Chicago and a dude from I guess NYC who is in some sort of Dead Prez offshoot group were both on point as anyone. So without casting blankets, somebody who's in at least Soren Baker's neighborhood...straighten that fool out already.

LOL--not even NYC cares about contemporary NYC rap.

Now that is funny. Hip-Hop: You've come a long way, baby!

Sounds like what that panel really needed was for KRS-One to come through and start calling people "FBI."

Hope whatever nasty bug you picked up is on the way out. That shit sounds like it's no joke.

Yeah, I'm feeling much better by this point. But this morning I go back to work for the first time since Friday. I'm getting a briefing from my boss as soon as I walk in...for our co-worker is up in Philly dealing with her brother and I've been in and out lately, so we have some stuff to catch up on. I'm in the middle of hearing about all of that and I get this text from the producer who's supposed to be teaching our afterschool class with us the next 2 Thurdays saying that he's had a family emergency of his own and he can't make it tomorrow. I'm like fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucccccccccccccccckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk, what's next? Thursday is tomorrooooooooooooow!!!! Luckily I was able to get another producer on the horn, maybe even one who will be a better fit in the end, to agree to do the next 2 weeks. So the kids are gonna get the grimy Southern laptop lesson plan rather than the boom-bappish, MPC lesson plan. Whatever, I just know that it's time to pick up a fresh bag as I haven't had a smoke (on purpose) in days. I need to check my vacation hours too, because it seems if I don't get out of here soon, a building is likely to fall on me or some other even stranger shit. I keep trying to dwell on positive things that are happening within the tall weeds of all of this chaos, but DAMN!!!
