Roland drum machine repairs

I'm considering picking up a used TR-808 and/or a 909. I'm really skeptical about buying older used gear because I really can't get this stuff repaired locally and shipping is going to kill me. Anyone have any experiences getting stuff like this repaired? If the repairs aren't too expensive, I guess I can stomach it but yeah...

    Sharp one told me that it would cost about $400 dollars to fix my $300 MD.

    How much are you talking about spending? I think a pretty safe rule of thumb is that gear that costs less than $500 will cost you just as much to get repaired.
