Damn, Sly really hit home with that one. Elements of it seem to pop up everywhere in soul/funk music.Either the 8 * "Yeeeeah" vocal part, the main groove of the rhythm section, or both. Now, I'm not talking about straight cover versions[/b], but songs that somehow "borrow" from it (pre-hiphop ). I know there's a bunch, but right now, I can only think of these two:Ike & Tina Turner "Bold Soul Sister"Willie Henderson "Soulful Football"Add on...

why was this such a popular riff to blatantly rip off?

countless funk songs follow the same rhythm but the melody is different enough that you dont really recognize it right away. example: james k-nine "live it up"

The first one I thought of, but it doesn't bug me, as the song kicks all kinds of ass.

No doubt. I don't see the SASS references as a bad "copycat" thing, but more as homages to a great tune - "wow, this groove is what's happening, let's mess around with it".
Sort of like version excursions on classic JA riddims, but not as systematic.

Forgot about the Miles one. At first I thought you guys were mistaken, because it's not at the end of "Yesternow". It's in the middle of the A-side, "Right Off". Haven't listened to that in a long time. Kind of a sneaky one, too. You don't really expect it on that bluesy shuffle rhythm.
