A non-situationist/agit prop non-inflammatory thread, anyone want to join in some adult communication on the following?.....Listeneing to this beauty at the weekend lots of tracks paying tribute to the great and good, imo John Coltrane works best.Just by chance the next LP pulled out was and a track I had previously overlooked, Joni, a tribute to Ms Mitchell I presume.Anymore original tributes to other artists (not cover versions of their songs) you care to school me on?

I can easily see this thread turning into a featuring Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Bob Marley, Muddy Waters, John Lennon and Elvis Presley tributes...I may as well anticipate the obvious:

"Bob, Muddy, John & Marvin," Syl Johnson's early eighties reggae tribute to Marley, Waters, Lennon and Gaye. Obscure single on his own Shama label, never on an album to my knowledge...

true, maybe the more incongruous the better.
How I would love to find out that, say, a Gene Simmons solo LP has a track in homage to the Sambalanca Trio, or an obscure Barry White 45 b-side reveals fandom for Jethro Tull. I would buy for sure.

Richie Cole - Waiting for Waits

somewhat ruined by the said Mr Tom Waits adding a parodic cameo at the end of the track; a bit too arch and knowing.

a funky track where a german guy (GDR - eastern germany) sings about angela... the lyrics are cool. organ, good percussion, nice guitars, bass going funky...
the GDR invited her over. they supported the black power movement in the US

the track has been featured in a soulstrut mix. prog mix... can't remember by who.

    not forgetting this from 1980

in which Lynott manages to praise the Buzzcocks, Clash, Slits, the Police, Sex Pistols, the Damned, the Jam, Bob Marley AND royally slaughter Stevie Wonder, whilst devoting a whole song to the death of Elvis.

  • Dexys Midnight Runners - Geno (tribute to Geno Washington)
Van Morrison - Jackie Wilson Said (I'm In Heaven When You Smile)
House Of Love - The Beatles & The Stones

These are all hits, I can't think of any obscure things at the moment.
