I just purchased a classic Volvo 240 wagon. I've been wanting one for a while and finally found one in decent shape with low mileage (in Volvo terms). Any Strutters have the 240 wagon, and if so, what am I in for besides being able to haul around huge amounts of record? Thanks in advance.

My mother had a 240 wagon when I was a kid and it was a great car. I drive a S60 now so I don't really know too much about the older models. A friend of mine has a 240 wagon and he does a lot of the repairs on it himself. Something you can't do on new Volvos. Get a couple of 240 repair manuals from eBay and you can learn to do a lot of work on the car yourself.

I have heard that the 240 is a great car to repair yourself. I bought it from a lifelong Volvo driver, who was just about in tears as he signed the title over. Thanks for the tip, searching the Bay right now.

    i had one (92) from 96-06
carted rekkids & stuff some 250.000 miles
    great ride

    i have an 850 now,
the seat is a lil more comfortable
but the 240 was a bit better over all

you need to keep an eye out for breaks
(daily commute in dc traffic related) & the tail pipe / exhaust was prone for regular
replacement (highway miles) but that is normal stuff,
the electrical wiring started with issues at the decade mark & the ac died in 05
but i drove the hell out of it

    enjoy !

  • I got a 1986 240DL wagon last year that I love. I don't do the repairs myself but the dudes at my local garage do them for hella cheap compared to the Volvo specialist place near my house. They seem to be pretty easy to repair. I have some electrical issues that I'm not motivated to fix and aren't that important (cyclops brake light reversed, rear wiper fucked, etc.) and I seem to have a problem with my coolant disappearing slowly but other than that a really great car and a trooper of a recordmobile.

I think I'm gonna need a clutch soon and I'm not looking forward to that ($$$) but I really believe I can get at least another 60,000 miles out of this car after that (I'm at 165K currently). Best $800 I ever spent.

I bought the 92 for a second car. It's solid all around, original paint, new tires, brakes and rack and pinion. It has 185 K, and the last owner only put 85K on it in 5 years. I'm not much of a mechanic, but looking forward to trying to do some simpel repair myself.
