Playing old-school hip-hop in a Jazz club and then getting trance requests.

This spot you are at has a serious identity crisis going on.

well ill put it like this. i brought rap records i figured would work in a jazz club ala tribe, roots, etc etc

the trance requests did not stop for a good 30 minutes. thank god a couple other djs are here to play as well.
the backstage lounge here is not too bad. ill hopefully be hiding out here for the remainder of the night.

So how does one get a job in such a venue? And what sort of stuff do you play?

Well how did the next 4 hours go for ya? I was in half price books the other day and some lady was buying records and trying to teach her daughter who looked about 11 years old about what was "good". She told her any Diana Ross or Bee Gees records were good and not to buy any Steely Dan because it was "Techno" music!!!!

if you get a lot of trance requests, i would buy a copy of sandstorm, and just play that song whenever someone requests 'trance,' even if that means hearing it six times in a night.

    cuz that song kicks ass

  • Hate trance requests.

Serious. Here's my question: did they ask for it by genre, by song name, or by description? (EG, Do you have any Dance Music?)

I'm guessing the last option. Those botches don't usually know the name of the genre they want to hear, so they couldn't ask by genre. And if they asked by song name, no one respectable would know what they're talking about. So, I'm guessing you had 12 people come up to you and ask for "something you can dance to"?

shoulda dropped that old NWA tune for them.

I played a film event, same shit, the organisor loved funk and shit, once it started harrasing her saying they all wanted House music, she came over and asked me to play some house, which i relucantly played (had a few cd's) and the fuckers didnt dance, so I told them to get fucked and dropped the funk again....although I sped the tracks up abit for them...(im considerate like that....).

I have a friend that just ignores them, cold... they cann be at the booth for an hour he wont look at them.... full poker faced master. And drunk chicks are the worse (unless their naked)

the last two hours were actually real cool. once the trance crowd left, the pressure from the promoters and the complaints about music stopped. folks chilled and danced until they closed the spot. i even got a very polite napkin request for "left my wallet in el segundo" and a cute lil female askin for peter piper.
one of the promoters said i "redeemed myself" in the last couple hours like i was playin wack shit in the first place... i dont know. i tried to not take it personal.

and about the requests, i was asked for "eric morillo, tiesto, paul van dyk kinda house". when did that become house music? but at least they knew what they wanted

Redeemed yourself? Fuck that. He's the promoter. Does he want it to be a trance night or a hip-hop/soul whatever night? A crowd is a crowd, but a promoter shouldn't be judging you because of some crowd he doesn't even want. That's straight

Yuh, It sounds like the promoter was the one Frickin' up. I wouldn't sweat it. People never cease to amaze me. I mean you wouldn't walk into a rave and request Showbiz and AG. Sounds like your night turned out alright in the end. Hopefully they made it worth your while.

i guess i was at the rright place at the right time!
i play alot of top 40 r&b and hip hop (i like to play the remixes no one has heard yet). but you also have youe regggeaton girls, your techno girls, or your rock girls. im prob not like your average scripclub dj. i try to stay away from the cliche music, though there aare girls that want that stuff.

sunday i was able to play a GRIP of dilla and whatever i wanted because we were taking breaks between girls.
