Influential Southern rapper Pimp C died of an accidental overdose of a combination of drugs he had name-checked in his lyrics ??? codeine and promethazine, the county coroner's office ruled Monday. The drugs are key ingredients in "syrup," a narcotic of choice in Southern rap circles that was most famously celebrated by Three 6 Mafia and Pimp C's group Underground Kingz in the 2000 single "Sippin' on some Syrup."The coroner's office said Pimp C had sleep apnea, which causes people to stop breathing for up to 30 seconds at a time while sleeping. That illness combined with large amounts of prescription-strength cough syrup is what killed the rapper, coroner's Capt. Ed Winter said.DJ Screw, another influential figure in the Texas hip-hop scene, died of a heart attack in 2000 after a reported overdose of codeine-laced cough syrup.Pimp C, born Chad Butler, was 33 when he was found in his bed Dec. 4 at the upscale Mondrian hotel in West Hollywood. LOS ANGELES, CA -- Coroner's investigators have determined the death of the rapper known as Pimp C was an accident.
Captain Ed Winter of the Los Angeles County coroner's office says Monday that 33-year-old Chad Butler suffered from sleep apnea and his condition reacted badly with codeine-containing cough medicine he took. Butler's body was found in a West Hollywood hotel room in December.
Winter says the levels of promethazine and codeine cough syrup in the rapper's system "were not that of an overdose."[/b]
whats your point?
Sad to know that drugs took away another musical talent.
Rest in Peace
seriously. this is sad. He had a medical condition and he drank too much sizzurp and didn't wake up. Sucks.
What's my point?
You just exemplified why I have to make a point in the first place.
We're getting conflicting information. In one report, Winters says "large amounts of cough syrup" and in the other he clarifies that the amount was "not that of an overdose".
Therefore, if Winter's clarification is true...Pimp C died of sleep apnea.[/b]
For all we know, he was just taking cough syrup to actually help a cold. We already know he was on prescription meds, so it's no surpirise that he had chemicals in his system.
But yeah, my point is to guard against the over-sensationalism of this story as a drug overdose. Very possibly, syrup was involved...which goes against what Pimp had been saying lately as well as what people close to him had been reporting...but ultimately, it was a condition that Pimp had been suffering through for years that did him in...sleep apnea.[/b]
Also, there are still all sorts of fishy things about the way Pimp C was found that have yet to be amply explained. So I'm extra suspisious of such a cliche'd rendition of the Pimp C story going down as the official last word.
This guy recorded lots of songs about the perils of the "purple stuff" and "syrup" trying to tell people that this stuff is bad and not to drink the "lean".
Then he dies way to young(RIP) from sleep apnea with codiene based cough syrup in his system that he was probably taking for a cold.
And his death has been ruled "accidental" like most sleep apnea cases.
This sounds all well and good but are you sure there isn't some conspiracy theory buried in here somewhere?
Something just doesn't add up.
Regardless, condolences to his family, friends and fans.
who is this Pimping C? was he a part of C and C Music Factory?
naw dude def didn't sing about the "perils" of that shit, but more the other way around, yet not necessarily glorifying it either...the fans did that.
Ed Winter, assistant chief of the coroner's office, said the levels of the medication were elevated, but not enough to be deemed an overdose.
But Butler had a history of sleep apnea, a condition that causes the sufferer to stop breathing for short periods during sleep. In tandem with that malady, the cough medication probably suppressed the artist's breathing long enough to bring on his death, Winter said.

If that news report has it accurately, sleep apnea didn't kill Pimp C. Nor did syrup.
Those two things - in combination with one another - killed Pimp C. Sounds like he was at risk given his apnea. If he had been given a prescription for cough syrup - and the doctor had known about about his apnea - that doesn't look good for the prescribing doctor. If he was using syrup recreationally, well...
