  • found these at the salvation army:

was pleasantly surprised by the kay gardner. shadow sample is a given, and aside from the two tracks with singing on them, the album is a pretty nice listen all the way through...

i cant even believe how often that record turns up. i see it constantly, and i dont know why.

  • almost forgot this one:

I love Django's electric stuff..even though most dont find it essential like the acoustic stuff...the tone is overdriven and distorted, adds another dimension to his playing... shit is awesome...

  • is that AEIOU album any good -- or just a really nice break? never heard the rest of it...

here's a few bits that turned up iin the post-crimbo post:

im pleased with the ALICE DONA ep's - they were 1 euro each and the bottom one is great -- loads of fun ye-ye stuff on there!! the shocking blue is knackered but ive been after a cheap copy for a while to play out. the ELECTRA COMBO is a mental prog flute and heavy drums orgy!! plus a beautiful cover.... good stuff.

  • Vernon and Jewel

Jewel Akens & Vernon ??? (Green??)

    yes

Not really...I forget Jewell's (two l's) last name, but I believe she was Vernon's wife as well as duet partner, I think. And Vernon is Vernon Garrett.

(BTW, Jewel Akens is a man!!)

  • My lady cared enough to put one of these under the Christmas tree:

along with an The Education of Sonny Carson, Stanley Crouch on Flying Dutchman, and some decent jazz records.

    MCF

  • just a few things in pburgh:

triumvirat-illusions on a double dimple. great record so far. lots of guitar, moog, and grand piano. I remember seeing someone bring this up on here before but couldnt find the thread.

toby ben-wake up to the sunshine.

folky rock on venture. has its moments.

I got to meet Mr. Akens in the 80's....super nice guy who has an amazing musical history...."Birds & Bees" is just scratching the surface. Shit, the dude recorded with Eddie Cochran!!!

Yeah, Akens used to be part of a duo called Jewel & Eddie (not Cochran!) that Eddie recorded with.

He was also a producer and artist at Jewel Records (can't make this info up, folks), recording for their sublabel Paula and producing some duet sides on Little Johnny Taylor & Ted Taylor for Ronn.

SORRY FOR THE THREADJACK, LET THE PARTY ROLL ON!!

SORRY FOR THE THREADJACK, LET THE PARTY ROLL ON!!

No threadjack, it's not a party until you
correct me ... I actually knew it was Vernon
Garrett and not Green, but was stoned enough
to say "yes" anyway ... I was guessing about Jewell ...

  • gettin random

^^ 1st Ramsey. Levy smokes. Sandra Alexandra is smoky jazz torch singer style but
its quite compelling. the 7 golden men OST is reallly strange.

^^ im not familiar with most of this latin stuff yet but it looked interesting

^^ "eatin aint cheatin'"?!?! the shelby flint is good spooky e-z

^^ got a crack at a mint nu-wave era collection incl some local uberraers

^^ the saxophone thing is a Avco e-z/rocking big band dealie, hoping for some stuff
like on those good ones on Mainstream.

Ill post some MP3s in a day or two. Yeah, if you read any criticism about his 1947 recordings(the french LP above I scooped is comprised of those)most Django purists and folks regard them as his worst recordings due to "his aggressive style and poor amplification that is distorted" I will listen to the hot club stuff for days on end, but when I first put this on, it was on some "fuggin A!" level...

yeah im liking it a lot, and im wondering if maybe the label (VJ International) has other things to offer??? I recall hearing at least one or two jazz joints off that label which were pretty much on the side.... anyway this ones definitely

  • VJ's a huge label... they released everything from The Beatles to Wynton Kelly and of course Pat Britt (which, IMO, is a one-tracker)
