How to Make Soundfiles? (Luddite-related)

I have a favor to ask. I would like to add soundclips to some of my upcoming auctions/sale lists but I'm not the most computer literate person in the world and I don't even know if I have the necessary software/hardware to make it happen. Can anyone give me a real basic step by step guide to doing this, including some suggestions for cheap (or free?) hosting and what the best soundfile format is for auction purposes. I'm talking about creating 1 or 2 minute soundclips. Or if there's a beginner's guide online that someone can post up. I tried looking but couldn't find anything.
