But does anyone believe this dude is just gonna go away??http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22066948/CARACAS, Venezuela - President Hugo Chavez suffered a stunning defeat Monday in a referendum that would have let him run for re-election indefinitely and impose a socialist system in this major U.S. oil provider.Voters rejected the sweeping measures Sunday by a vote of 51 percent to 49 percent, said Tibisay Lucena, chief of the National Electoral Council. She said that with 88 percent of the votes counted, the trend was irreversible.Opposition supporters shouted with joy as Lucena announced the results on national television early Monday, their first victory against Chavez after nine years of electoral defeats. Some broke down in tears. Others began chanting: ???And now he???s going away!???[/b]

my colombian friends were pissed about his comments and action about their country

    what was that about

  • At least he doesn't take it up the ass like the rest of the OPEC countries do from the U.S. That said, his dictatorial streak is disturbing to say the least.

Dictators don't generally have multiple referendums and humbly accept defeats (this one being the first in 8? years). You can't blame the guy for continuing to fight what he believes given the time he has.

That victory margin is interesting in itself. Gives a decent glimpse into how polarised Venezuela is right now. I'd like to know the % of abstentions.

bro, we're the ones taking it up the ass from OPEC.

I sure don't. This is a good development, though.

at least per the NYT alot of Chavez supporters stayed home, not wanting to vote against him, but also not wild about his questionable power grab moves...

Impossible...if there is any back door action going on the U.S. is responsible.

    It's what we do.
