I think we may have done this before, so if you got a link... post it and we'll dead this.I finally got a CD alarm clock that will play CD-R's, so whats the best album/CD to wake up to??I find old school rap (and revivalists) to be kind of jarring... and downtempo makes for a struggle to get up.

  • anything by Air(electronic) does the trick for me, kind of downtempo, but more mesmerizing than anything. I also would say check out Josh Ritter, excellent song writer with a good mix of upbeat and slower pop/folk songs. Always puts me in a great mood.

but now I have a kid, no need for an alarm clock anymore

  • For the last month, I've been getting up to that live Trouble Funk cd. It wakes me up w/ a smile on my face, ready to roll.

Billie Holiday is always my favorite.
"I didn???t know what time it was
    Then I met you.
Oh, what a lovely time it was,
    How sublime it was too!
I didn???t know what time it was
    You hold my hand.
Warm like the month of may it was,
And I???ll say it was grand.

Grand to be alive, to be young,
To be mad, to be yours alone!
Grand to see your face, feel your touch,
Hear your voice say I???m all your own.

I didn???t know what time it was
    Live was no prize.
I wanted love and here it was
    Shining out of your eyes.
    I???m wise,
And I know what time it is now..."

sayin. I do miss listening to the occasional gospel here and there. One of my friends grew up in the gospel choir and has such an incredible voice!

I'm hoping to mix him over something I'm working on. (fingers crossed)

I will say, I still have a heart for gospel house, and it's best heard live in Chicago. I know, crazy, huh?

  • i dont need music to wake up but i would definitely love to hear this shit first thing in the morning.

For me the first side off Donny Hathaway, Extensions of a Man is the perfect way to start the day.

    Hey Elise,

I grew up in the church, so Gospel music in the morning was a staple in my home. The highlights include:

    -The Gospel Keynotes.
    -The Gospel Caravans.
    -The Brooklyn All-Stars.
    -The Mighty Clouds of Joy.
    -The Little Wonders.
    -The Highway QC's.
    -Mahalia Jackson.
    -The Williams Brothers.
    -The Jackson Southernaires.
    -The Dixie Humminbirds.
    -The Fantastic Violinaires
    -Rev. C.L. Franklin.
    -The Soul Stirrers.
    -The Swan Silvertones/Rev. Claude Jeter.
    -Sis. Rosetta Thorpe.
    -Inez Andrews.

...and too many more to name, so I'll stop.

    Peace,

    Big Stacks from Kakalak

  • The D.O.C. - Funky Enough or BDP's Blackman's In Effect if you like to wake up to funky fresh rhymes

Saxon's This Town Rocks or Anthrax' Time is you like to wake up with a lil' Cap't Crunch in your cereal

Kate Bush's Waking The Witch if you like to slowly get nudged out of bed (it does come with the cure of the snooze button steez)

You sound old. I didn't even know people still used those things.

  • This would be nice to wake up to...

Diana Krall? That would make me get up, too - to turn it off!

  • this post just reminded me of this for some reason

  • never left the cd alarm clock going on 3 years now:

whatever that sound is in the beginning of "i wanna get high" scares the shit out of me.

  • i actually do wake up to music everyday now that i think of it. I have "its your thing" as my alarm clock tone on my phone. It comes through so loud and trebley it scares me out of bed. Now i actually hate this song.

  • this post just reminded me of this for some reason

Out of both versions of The Office this is easily my favorite episode yet.

As a side note. During my freshman year of college my roomate and i both took this mandatory computer class and our professor looked like Jay-Z with a jheri curl. She looked just like dude, seriously. So, every tuesday and thursday for the whole semester we would wake up to a different Jay-Z song. Whoever became conscious first would yell "Jigga" across the room, the other would respond and the day would begin. Those were the days.

I usually wake up to some Slint. Starting it off nice and easy with Breadcrumb trail, by the time you get to the heavy part in Nosferatu man you're wide awake!
